Supporters Of Expanded Gambling Feeling Confident ? CBS Baltimore

BALTIMORE (WJZ) ? In Maryland, several key ballot issues drew voters to the polls in high numbers. One of the most hotly contested was expanded gambling, which pulled out a victory early Wednesday morning. Jessica Kartalija has the latest on the battle over expanded gambling here in Maryland.

Fifty-two percent of voters are in favor of expanded gambling and 48% were against. Supporters say expanded gambling will keep more money in our state, create jobs and give money to education.

At National Harbor, those in support of Question 7 gathered to see the results of the election. That?s also where they want to see a new casino built.

As Marylanders went to the polls, politicians worked to sway those still up in the air on Question 7.

?For us, Question 7 is making sure we keep revenue in the state of Maryland,? said Prince George?s County Executive Rushern Baker.

With multi-million dollar ad campaigns on both sides, politicians hit polling places in the eleventh hour.

?I just think it?s critically important for Maryland to step up to keep Maryland money here in Maryland and not in West Virginia, to support our neighbors in Prince George?s County but really for all over the state,? said Howard County Executive Ken Ulman.

?They just say this one thing over and over again that there are going to be more money for schools and you?re going to believe it but I think most people know by now that?s not the case,? said Marta Mossburg, Public Policy Institute.

Question 7 allows for additional slot machines, add table games in addition to those slots and allows a sixth casino to be built at National Harbor in Prince George?s County.

That casino at National Harbor would be similar to what you?d see at Atlantic City or Las Vegas.

After three successes in the black and white vest, Supreme Johnson draws fifth in the Bags Track Championship Dogs

The Grade IR Bags Track Championship Dogs will be hosted by Perry Barr on Tuesday, 6th November, 2012 over 480 metres flat. The locals competing are, Barracuda Frank and Movealong Joker. Supreme Johnson and Cusco have come from Hall Green, while Monmore is being represented by, Ballingarry Shaw and Farloe Gambit. All the entries have not won over 480 metres, but they do have the experience of racing over it.

One of the strongest links in the line-up is the two-year-old black hound, Supreme Johnson. He has drawn the fifth trap, and has been successful in three out of the last four Grade A1 races.

He landed a Grade A1 480 metres flat race at Hall Green on 29th September, 2012. Racing in the jacket of the last box, the two-year-old quickly raced away from the rest of the lot, remained on the wide end of the track, and concluded the race in 28.57 seconds by keeping a firm grip on the lead throughout the track distance.

The speed and lead made him win by the margin of 4 ? lengths which saw Ballymac Orchard settling into the second slot.

Ninja Jamie?s son was then dominant in a Grade A1 480 metres on 13th October, 2012, over 480 metres at Hall Green.

Breaking from the same box as the previous one, the S. Buckland trained was quick to set into pace, take the wide end from the middle, and then stick to the leading role in the field.

The favourite entry completed the trip in 28.66 seconds, and defeated Eden Twister by 1 ? lengths.

What got him achieving the back-to-back was a Grade A1 480 metres flat race on 19th October, 2012 at Hall Green.

The same trap for the straight third time got him declaring success in 29.09 seconds, and taking advantage of the final length that went in his favour.

The drilling session of the two-year-old at Perry Barr was from the similar box too, however the draw in the actual contest is fifth, the orange jacket.

He will need to look out for the red box, Barracuda Frank, as his speed and the draw, both are in favour.

Geologists find East Coast quakes travel farther

(AP) ? Data from the 2011 earthquake centered in Virginia shows East Coast tremors can travel much farther and cause damage over larger areas than previously thought, the U.S. Geological Survey said Tuesday.

The agency estimated about one-third of the U.S. population could have felt the magnitude 5.8 tremor centered about 50 miles northwest of Richmond, which would mean more people were affected than any earthquake in U.S. history. Scientists also found the quake that caused more than $200 million in damage triggered landslides at distances four times farther and over an area 20 times larger than research from previous quakes has shown.

"Scientists are confirming with empirical data what more than 50 million people in the eastern U.S. experienced firsthand: this was one powerful earthquake," USGS Director Marcia McNutt said in a news release about the findings presented at the Geological Society of America conference in Charlotte, N.C.

Researchers used landslides to see how far-reaching the shaking from East coast earthquakes could be. The unexpected jolt cracked the Washington Monument in spots and toppled delicate masonry high atop the National Cathedral. The shaking was felt from Georgia to New England.

According to the findings, the farthest landslide from the quake was 150 miles from the epicenter, a greater distance than any other similar-sized earthquake. Previous similar quakes have resulted in landslides no farther than 36 miles from the epicenter.

Additionally, the landslides from the 2011 tremor occurred in an area of about 12,895 square-miles ? about the size of the state of Maryland. Previous studies indicated an area of about 580 square-miles ? about the size of Houston ? from an earthquake of similar magnitude.

"It's just much more dangerous to have an earthquake at that level back on the East Coast than it would be on the West Coast," said Edwin Harp, a USGS scientist and co-author of the study. "If something big happened, although it's much less frequent, it would tend to damage a lot more buildings because they're probably not quite up to the codes that they are in California."

Geologic structure and rock properties on the East Coast allow seismic waves to travel farther without weakening compared with the West Coast, Harp said.

He said equations used to predict ground shaking might need to be revised now that scientists know more about the power of East Coast earthquakes.

The information also will help with building codes as well as emergency preparedness, the USGS said.

While West Coast earthquake veterans scoffed at what they viewed as only a moderate temblor, the August 2011 quake changed the way officials along the East Coast viewed emergency preparedness. Emergency response plans that once focused on hurricanes, tornadoes, flooding and snow are being revised to include quakes.

Some states have enacted laws specifically related to the quake, and there is anecdotal evidence of a spike in insurance coverage for earthquake damage.

Gas shortages lead to gray market even as lines shrink

1 hr.

Shorter but persistent lines at gas stations in the Northeast and sporadic closures have led to a gray?market for fuel on Craigslist, with prices for delivery of a five-gallon container ranging from $30-$100 Tuesday.

New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman's office opened a very preliminary investigation into the Craigslist postings, a spokeswoman told NBC News, adding?it was mainly within the context?of a broader probe, announced Monday, into price gouging complaints after Superstorm Sandy.

Craigslist was not immediately available to comment.

Drivers also turned to social media to find where they could buy gas legitimately. Twitter account @njgas kept its growing band of 6,400 plus followers posted with crowd-supplied updates on gas station openings, wait times, and rationing rules.

More of the major fuel refineries that supply the area had recovered from Superstorm?Sandy and reopened Tuesday, but 10 remained shuttered, Reuters reported, including two which contain twenty-five percent of the area's fuel capacity.?A barge bearing an additional 17.6 million gallons of biofuel will be allowed to berth and deliver badly needed fuel to New Jersey, thanks to a temporary easement of regulations by the EPA.

The bigger problem seemed to be ongoing?power outages. ?Without power, even if the gas stations have fuel, they can't run the pumps.

The Long Island Power Authority listed 200,428 of its customers remained without electricity on Tuesday morning, down from over 300,000 on Monday. In New Jersey, 582,000 remained without power, while Jersey Central Power & Light reported 257,884 outages, the AP reported. PSE&G, which had pledged to restore full power to homes by Sunday, revised that till later in the week.

In areas where power had been restored, more gas stations were able to open. This allowed cars to spread out at more pumps and decrease overall wait times. In Central New Jersey, lines had decreased Tuesday from 75-100 minutes over the weekend to waits of no longer than 5-10 minutes, driver?Michael Franken of Plainsboro told NBC News.?

In the?Queens borough of?New York, where gas line tensions over the weekend got so bad a man was arrested for allegedly pulling out a gun in order to cut the queue, some gas stations this morning had zero lines, resident?Paul Eng told NBC News. Others had half the size they did before. However, a number of stations remained closed in the borough.?

In other parts, high driver demand and ongoing station closures meant drivers were still experiencing long delays.?In Teaneck, N.J., lines ?are still long enough to cause traffic on Route 4 to come to a near standstill in various parts,? one?driver, Keith Kaplan, told NBC News. ?Annoying, since we are now causing the shortage.?

Experts say the backups at the pump won't completely end even by the end of the week.

?But the situation should at least be manageable," Ralph Bombardiere, head of Gasoline and Repair Shop Association of New York, told Reuters. ?While more (stations) now have power restored, the increased demand they're seeing is emptying the tanks faster than normal.?

Reuters contributed to this report.

Fight vs. Change

If you are still undecided and haven?t voted, you don?t have a lot of time to read position papers and rewatch the debates. You certainly don?t have time to read a five-part series on presidential attributes (though you should). On the other hand, you may be undecided because you?ve read everything, and the more you read the more confused you become.

Whatever camp you?re in, time is drawing short. So here is a quick rundown of Barack Obama and Mitt Romney?s closing arguments and parting shots.

Barack Obama: Fight. President Obama is ending the campaign on a pugilistic note. Though he starts his rallies by nodding to the spirit of brotherhood that prevailed in the wake of Hurricane Sandy, he presents himself as a warrior for regular people. He has settled on a narrative of combat, telling the story of his presidency as a series of tough and unpopular battles?from the auto bailout to his health care plan. And, in this story, it is the middle class he seeks to defend. Covered with scars and bruises, he promises not to give up the fight for programs that will help build the middle class. ?You know that I?ll fight for you and your families every single day, as hard as I know how,? he says frequently. The word fight appears more than a dozen times in his speeches. He presents himself as a bulwark against the Republicans in Congress but also against the privileged class of financiers and uber-rich that Romney is supposed to represent. ?The folks at the very top in this country, they don?t need another champion in Washington,? he says. ?The laid-off furniture worker who?s retraining at age 55 for a career in biotechnology?she needs a champion.?The small restaurant owner who needs a loan to expand after the bank turned him down?he needs a champion.?The cooks and waiters and cleaning staff working overtime in a hotel somewhere, trying to save enough to buy a first home or send their kid to college?they need a champion.??The president is making a deal with his audiences: If he isn?t going to give up on the fight, he is asking voters not to give up on him.

Mitt Romney: Change. Mitt Romney has appropriated Obama?s message of change from the 2008 campaign. Every challenger is naturally a change candidate, but Romney is using the word change as often as a checkout clerk. The comparison to President Obama doesn?t simply end with the use of his words, though. Romney has been measuring Obama against his 2008 promises. ?Instead of bridging the divide, he has made it wider,? says Romney. His closing argument has little red meat. The base is already fired up, so the former governor of Massachusetts isn?t talking to them. Romney?s closing message is to undecided voters?particularly undecided women. He will turn around the economy because he?s turned things around before. ?I built a business, and turned around another. I helped put an Olympics back on track. And with a Democratic legislature, I helped turn my state from deficit to surplus, from job losses to job growth, and from higher taxes to higher take-home pay.? The argument closes on an elegiac vision of togetherness. ?On November 7th, we'll get to work. We'll reach across the street to that neighbor with the other yard sign and we'll reach across the aisle in Washington to people of good faith in the other party.? Without coming out and saying it, Romney is closing his final campaign rallies with a message of hope. This is the ?hope? portion of President Obama?s 2008 message, though in today?s partisan Washington it sounds more like a fantasy.

The campaign of 2012 is now down to a matter of hours. We have endured an endless number of speeches, a litany of supposed gaffes and game-changers, hundreds of millions of dollars in advertisements, and a battleground map that barely moved despite all of the above. Tomorrow, provided the lawyers don?t get their way, one of the candidates will earn the 270 electoral votes needed to win. Then, we will know whether Americans want a fighter or a new day. There?s nothing left to do but vote and count. ?
