Amy, movie star ? The Ottawa Writers' Guild

??????????? Amy Leitner was a middle aged woman in 2012, ?For God?s sake!? she often added. A creative writing major at the University of Kansas, she had styled her blonde hair in big curls, with an eye on the fifties. Her peers were into skinny jeans and eighties studded leather. She discovered hair curlers and skirts. She stayed on living in Lawrence after her graduation from KU, but she?d moved there from her, until then, lifetime hometown of two thousand residents, just an hour and a half?s drive south, in Chenowa, Kansas. ?It was a matter of some 80 miles geographically speaking, from the halls of Chenowa High School to Lawrence?s Massachusetts Street, but Lawrence might as well have been on the west coast compared to how different the two Kansas towns were.

??????????? Amy had been an actress from her earliest years. She?d started acting at home first, in her family?s kitchen while her mother made spaghetti, then in small roles at the Chenowa First Baptist Church, and these led to a progression of Chenowa School District 258 musicals and plays which set her on a course in the arts and music. A band scholarship for the trombone, ?For God?s sake!? helped pay her way through college. She wrote for the Chenowa High School Monitor and somewhere in her high school career, writing for the Monitor, she?d determined to become a writer, and somewhere after his own graduation from KU, and before Amy was born, Bill Leitner, her dad, had determined she?d attend KU. Bill and Linda Leitner supported their daughter Amy?s performances in plays and musicals and listened to and read her poetry and stories, and supported her decision to major in creative writing, yet they still remained Baptist. While she attended college, her mother wrote her nice letters and mailed her a Hallmark birthday card each year.

??????????? Amy was not what the boys at Chenowa High School called ?hot?. She didn?t resemble, either in dress or attitude, the women in the hip-hop music culture which, inexplicably, was so popular at her small rural school. She was eclectic, for sure, there among her classmates, most of whom she?d grown up with since kindergarten. She wore her own unique style, which mostly meant vintage clothes gleaned from her mothers? saved wardrobes and from a Wal-Mart in a town ten minutes drive from Chenowa.

??????????? She?d known from an early age she?d marry a brown haired man. There had never been any question. She wanted a man with thick curly brown hair she could grab by the handful and run her fingers through. She?d pictured a healthy Pacific Northwestern type man wearing a few days growth of stubble on his chin, a red flannel, pearl snap shirt, and brown carpenter pants. She?d written in her journal about meeting Tyler Reynolds for the first time as she hung about the college?s theater department auditorium after an audition for Tommy: A Rock Opera, a production she?d never heard of before the audition night: ?Met my brawny man tonight!?? He was there as a theater major, a set designer and builder. Sawdust clung on the toes of his leather boots. She was smitten at once.

??????????? Tyler Reynolds was raised in Missouri, just about the same distance away as Chenowa, only east, and in a suburb which most people in Chenowa considered Kansas City. He apparently didn?t appreciate her curled hair and polyester Capri pants, nor her sheer scarves she often wore tied round her neck. In fact, he commented once to her that she looked like she was wearing a costume from Grease. She misunderstood his derision, because her judgment was clouded with infatuation, and instead embraced it as a big compliment, ?I know, right??

??????????? Amy couldn?t quite get Tyler?s attention. She tried flirty eye contact. She tried small talk. She tried being a third hand for him while he built the set. Nothing she tried was successful for her. Of course, being an actress, she immediately connected his indifference toward her with her performances on stage. If he wasn?t noticing her, she surmised, it must be that she did not impress him in her roles. He was too gaga over another actress, a theater major, Robin: The short haired brunette with a connection to Hollywood (her aunt was an artist for the Simpsons) and though her name was Elizabeth Johnson, she insisted people call her Robin. Amy began to think a lot about how she could get Tyler?s attention.

??????????? Unfortunately this is not a story where the girl gets the boy. Amy could not attract and keep Tyler?s attention, and that was that. She performed in various roles for productions with him all four years and admired his profile as he gazed upon Robin. Amy graduated and continued to write her poetry and her stories and eventually, when no one came out of the woodwork at the coffee shop open mic nights to change her life because of the powerful words she?d recited, she took a job teaching theater in a small high school, a lot like her hometown of Chenowa, a short drive from her apartment in Lawrence.

??????????? Her dreams about appearing in the movies were shelved along with all of her journals and notebooks full of stories and poems. She had some friends, of course, in Lawrence; after all she was an outgoing, confident, and intelligent woman. Really, her hang up with that brown haired boy in college had been her only significant character flaw; her one insecurity. She didn?t date, but her Baptist upbringing could be blamed for that. For she still entertained a notion of the different roles a man and a woman were supposed to play when it came to the courting ritual: a man asked a woman on a date after they?d met, they did not meet for the first time in a bar. She found she wasn?t terribly sad, lonely, and depressed without a husband, the way she was sure she?d feel and the way Linda, her mother, believed she must be. Linda still mailed her nice letters and a Hallmark card on her birthday, ?We?re praying God brings you a husband.?

??????????? Amy learned an alumnus of the college planned to film a modern day production of Antigone in Lawrence. There?d been multiple emails sent to her address through the school where she taught theater requesting lots of volunteers to appear in the crowd scenes. She loved Sophocles and Antigone and along with encouraging her students to participate, she kept her calendar open for the three weekends in late March and early April when the filming would take place, as well as the weekend in February when auditions would be held for the role of Antigone and Ismene. Amy planned to give her best audition and get the lead role and finally be at the center of the production and have her face be seen by thousands of people, maybe even Tyler from back in college. This was going to be her opportunity she?d been looking for. Her time was now, and she was ready for it.

??????????? The day of her audition, Amy did something out of character for herself; she wore her shirt with the top two buttons unfastened. She?d never been one to try to work whatever sex appeal she might have possessed, but if it was going to be of any help to her to land the role of Antigone, she?d do it. She felt doubly self-conscious about the two unfastened buttons, because the audition was held in February and it was just plain cold. Here she was, practically topless, she felt, trying to sell her body for a role in a movie. What would her mother think? She knew what her mother would think, and she made a decision to ignore that thought.

??????????? She hadn?t expected so many men and women to show up for the audition. She?d had it in her mind that she might have been one of a few dozen people in Lawrence who liked the play, and that at the most her competition for lead role would be limited to maybe six others. When she arrived and walked into the lobby of the auditorium where the auditions were being held and saw it packed full of what she guessed must have been close to a thousand actors and actresses, she found a corner by a wastebasket and discreetly buttoned one of those buttons she?d left undone. Some of the women there would definitely have an advantage over her if the producers were looking for sex appeal. They were dressed as if for a day on the beach shooting a hip-hip video. Well, that was fine by Amy. She?d have to rely on her years of training and experience as a true thespian in order to get this role, and she felt confident about that. She?d not cheapen herself nor go against what her self-conscious told her was decent after all.

She felt much better about the decision and after registering her name at a table that was set up in the lobby for that purpose, she returned to the waste basket in the corner and practiced her monologue. It was a monologue Antigone gives to Creon about doing what is right, rather than doing what the law says. She had it memorized no problem, and she concentrated on her breathing techniques so as to keep herself calm.

It was a long wait and she eventually began to read a paperback book she?d brought along to pass the time. There was not a real good place to be found for her to write in her journal, so she kept it in her handbag along with a tuna salad sandwich. They called her in sometime after lunch, to the auditorium where no less than six people were seated together in the third row conversing in hushed tones and taking notes. They barely recognized she was there and on stage, and then a woman looked up and told her to state her name and to please begin. Amy did just that and it seemed to her that the group of people there never really paused in their own discussion and paper shuffling, and note taking during her entire two minute performance. She wasn?t entirely sure they?d heard any of it, yet when she?d concluded right away the same woman dismissed her by thanking her for her time and assuring her they?d be making a decision for callbacks by the next Saturday. Rather than walk back out through the rest of the audition hopefuls still in the lobby, she left from an exit at the side of the stage which she was familiar with and led down an empty hall to an exit that came out the side of the building. She went back to her apartment and took a nap.

She waited patiently and forced herself not to get excited all week long in anticipation of the phone call. She didn?t get a phone call. Instead, she received a mass rejection email inviting her to consider participating by being a crowd member in some of the scenes. Well, she?d do it, she thought. So what if she didn?t get the lead role, or any role, that was the nature of the beast. She?d be a crowd member and she?d be the best darn crowd member an audience had ever seen. She?d make sure she stood out some way, so that people would forever recognize Amy Leitner in that crowd, and know she?d been in the movies. If there was any chance Tyler would watch this sometime somewhere, he?d know she was in that movie. She had to make that happen. This might be her only chance.

She attended all the available production dates she?d been sent where a crowd scene would be filmed. They were outdoors scenes on the campus of the university. She?d carefully followed the wardrobe suggestions made by the production team and dressed in warm, red tones. She allowed the make-up artist to inspect her appearance in a rush and was given the approval and sent out to join the others on the side of a hill beside the law building. It was late in April, and warm and pleasant under the sun and cool and breezy at the same time. The others to be in the crowd scene were a friendly crowd and Amy talked with a group of individuals about the experience. The three women had also tried out for Antigone and received the same invitation to participate in the crowd scene. The two guys she talked to had not auditioned for a specific role, but had gotten the go-ahead for crowd member on-site when they showed up in the morning.

Amy wondered how on earth she could distinguish herself from the rest of the crowd during this scene when they were to listen and react to Creon?s sentence for Polynieces? dead body not to be buried. She noticed a big device had been set up for use during filming which she recognized from behind the scenes filming shots. She thought it was called a floating boom. It would go up and around over their heads in a smooth circle for a long pan shot and that gave her an idea which she put to use during filming.

After the weekend filming dates were over she received an email telling about the movie premiere for Antigone at a downtown artsy movie theater in Lawrence. She?d received an invitation to attend because of her participation and her audition. She felt honored to have received it, but kept grounded by reminding herself that all the participants received these invitations, it was not something special for her. Nevertheless, she immediately looked up Tyler Reynolds? last known address. They?d swapped contact information on the set strike night after their shared participation in The Crucible; she as Tituba and he as a set builder. They?d all, all the cast and crew, traded contact information.

??????????? His name and phone number and his parents? address she?d filed under R for Reynolds, but the play program from The Crucible was still in there with all her cast and crews? names, addresses and phone numbers scrawled upon it. Tyler?s was written in the tall, irregular thickness of a big carpenter?s pencil. She sat at her kitchen table and penned him a nice, neutral letter upon some sheets of bank stationary, inviting him to attend the movie premiere on a night in October, just in time to coincide with high schools all across Kansas when they begin reading Antigone in class. She tried not to gush in the letter, or sound desperate for him to come, or to let him know that if only he would come to see the premiere with her and be her date and see her up on the big screen in an actual movie theater in Lawrence, she might then be able to lose these feelings of insecurity she had, and wouldn?t worry anymore about people who might think her a joke. She mailed the letter off and waited patiently to hear from him.

??????????? In the meantime, she checked facebook to find him, and twitter, to no avail. If he was on one of those social media, he was doing so under a different name. Amy reminded everyone on her facebook page to take time to go and see her in the film when it came out for the public. ?You won?t be able to miss me!?

??????????? A week to the day after she?d mailed her letter to Tyler, it was returned to her unopened and undelivered. Amy took it in stride. She thought about maybe drinking some wine and getting drunk, but she didn?t. Instead she continued to write on a story she was writing about an umbrella that was stuck in the back of a closet and was lonely because it missed its soul mate, the rain. But, the umbrella was friendly and its friends in the closet, a partial box of Christmas ornaments were its old friends that comforted it and in the end the umbrella decided to be happy about where it was and who it was with.

??????????? Amy invited her mother to the premiere. She called her the week before the opening. Amy was given two complimentary tickets, so she could only take one of her parents. She decided on her mother easily, without any thoughts of hurting her father?s feelings. If she didn?t invite her mother, her mother would have had hurt feelings, ?For God?s sake!?

??????????? For the premiere, Amy wore a conservative white dress with big disk like buttons on its front and a new red purse. She?d found a pair of white kid gloves she?d sewn on a bit of lace onto to wear that matched her red framed sunglasses with wide lenses. Her mother wore a simple blue dress with a bit of lace around the bottom and the wrists. It was a big crowd of people involved in the arts in one way or another that attended, and their outfits didn?t draw much attention. Amy?s mother smiled and seemed genuinely pleased to be a part of it. People stood in small groups sipping champagne, and soon Amy found a couple of the crowd members she?d stood beside during filming for her mother and her to stand and talk to. Amy was proud that she could be involved in such a thing and to show her mother her neat friends. Her mother didn?t show any disappointment at all, when the friends were female.

??????????? Soon the lobby of the movie theater began to empty and the people in attendance filed into the theater to view the film. Amy and her mother sat near the aisle about two thirds of the way back, which was a compromise for each of them who held different movie theater seating requirements. Luckily, the people in front of Amy and her mother were not tall and they had a good view of the screen. They waited for the lights to dim and for the movie to start.

??????????? Amy had warned her mother that her scenes were very small, but assured her with a grin that her mother would not miss her, she?d be able to see her clearly. Her mother tightened her grip on the handles of her purse on her lap.

??????????? The film was shot well. The director had an eye for cinematic story telling. During the opening sequence Amy leaned to her mother and pointed out some of the places she recognized in and around Lawrence. ?Now, get ready,? she whispered to her mother, as the camera showed a scene of a large, important looking building and a crowd of people swarmed around its steps and a man with quieting the crowd with upraised hands. The camera panned across the crowd moving from down low, looking up at the back of the peoples? heads, up and moving to the right. Right there, when the camera moved along its path to the right, about the time it reached shoulder height; there was Amy. In the background the important looking man was gathering the noisy crowd?s attention with his arms spread. All around her the agitated crowd had their backs to the camera, their attention upon the man on the steps. Their hands gestured and there was much movement as of people pressing for a better view and as of people questioning him audibly. And amidst all this was Amy?s face. Amy stood still among all the movement in the crowd. She alone faced the camera. Her eyes were upturned, and her face clearly followed the camera?s path. Everyone else in the crowd looked the opposite direction, toward the man in Amy?s background, but Amy completely disregarding the rules of staying in character, allowed her face to acknowledge the camera?s presence and to track its course with her face and eyes. It was clear Amy was not supposed to do this during filming. It was so obvious, one might have half expected her to wave and say ?Hi mom!?

??????????? The shot cut away to a close up of the man, Creon. Amy?s mother turned and looked upon her daughter in the seat next to her. Her mother?s mouth was drawn back and those questioning wrinkles on her forehead made shadows in the movie theater light. Her squinted eyes sought an explanation from Amy.

??????????? Amy didn?t notice her mother looking at her. She was smiling a big open mouth smile, and without turning toward her mother she slid her hand across into her mother?s hand and her mother heard her whisper to her, ?There I am mom. Right where I always knew I belonged.?

Whistleblower wins in Supreme Court in Japan first

? Japan's Supreme Court has ruled in favor of a whistleblower for the first time in a case that highlights the harsh treatment outspoken employees have endured in a nation that zealously values loyalty and conformity.

Despite being a good salesman with experience in the United States, Masaharu Hamada, 51, was demoted at Olympus Corp., forced to take rudimentary tests and ignored by colleagues, in what he alleged was reprisal for raising the issue of supplier complaints.

He received a notice Saturday from this nation's highest court, dated Thursday, dismissing the appeal by Tokyo-based camera and medical equipment maker Olympus of a 2010 lower court decision. It sealed the victory of the little "salaryman" against a giant of Japan Inc.

"We need a society where honest hard-working people don't lose out," Hamada told The Associated Press. "This is about justice and human rights."

Hamada's story highlights how workers labeled as misbehaving are punished in Japan, where major companies like Olympus offer lifetime employment, although they more freely fire contract and part-time workers.

That means employees like Hamada become targets of cruel harassment designed to silence them or make them quit. Hamada was nearly driven to breakdown during his five-year battle.

Japan is behind some Western nations in protecting whistleblowers. A law to protect them was enacted only in 2006, and critics say it is inadequate because it does not penalize companies that punish whistleblowers. To pursue legal action, whistleblowers can't quit as the law only applies to employees.

Only a handful of whistleblower has come forward in Japan in the past few decades. When they do, they are treated as outcasts, sometimes being told to sit in closet-sized offices or to mow the lawn. Sometimes even their children become victims of discrimination. So abhorred is the employee who dares to question the company.

Hamada sued Olympus in 2008, saying he was punished for relaying a supplier's complaint that its best employees were being lured away by Olympus. Olympus said he was merely transferred, not demoted.

His case is considered a whistleblowing case in Japan because he went first to his bosses and then to the company compliance unit, trying to raise questions about the professional behavior of colleagues for the public good, and, as the Supreme Court found, was punished unfairly in retribution.

Last year, the Tokyo High Court reversed an earlier district court decision and ordered Olympus to pay Hamada 2.2 million yen ($28,000) in damages for the transfer. Olympus had appealed.

Olympus was not immediately available for comment Saturday. In the past, it has called the court rulings favoring Hamada "regrettable."

Olympus has been targeted recently by another high-profile whistleblower, Briton Michael Woodford, the former chief executive.

Woodford was fired in October after he blew the whistle on dubious accounting at Olympus. The company later acknowledged it hid 117.7 billion yen ($1.5 billion) in investment losses dating back to the 1990s. Three former Olympus executives, including the ex-chairman, were arrested earlier this year on suspicion of orchestrating the accounting cover-up.

Ed Conard on Bain Capital, Economics and Obama's Record (Video)

Edward Conard spent 14 years as a partner at Bain Capital, the most scrutinized company in America. But these days, he?s in the news for another reason. As the author of ?Unintended Consequences,? Conard has challenged the conventional wisdom about the U.S. economy and outlined ideas that have resulted in scorn from the New York Times and Jon Stewart.

Conard visited Heritage this week to share his perspective at The Bloggers Briefing. He also sat down for an interview to talk about the book, media coverage of Bain Capital and why President Obama has such a poor economic record.

While working for Bain Capital, Conard headed the firm?s New York office and oversaw the acquisition of large industrial companies. He also worked alongside Mitt Romney. So as the Washington Post and other media outlets examine Bain Capital, Conard sees the coverage not just as a critique of private equity but American business as well.

?These are really attacks on business,? he said. ?They pit employees against employers. It?s kind of old-fashioned union organizing in a sense. And they want to pretend that managers only work for investors, Bain Capital only works for investors. But they don?t realize we?re all working for the customer, first and foremost.?

He noted the vast majority of Bain Capital?s investments were successful, growing two-and-a-half times faster than the S&P 500. Even though those investments added about $100 billion of revenue relative to the S&P 500, Bain is portrayed as a ?vampire? and ?job destroyer.?

On Obama?s poor economic record ? the unemployment rate stands at 8.2 percent ? Conard attributes a ?profound misunderstanding of what drives growth of the economy and what drives employment in the economy.? He continued:

I think that by misinterpreting the financial crisis for political gain and turning employees against employers for political gain, I think he?s done a great disservice to the economy. I don?t think he?s fixed the problems that have to be fixed, and then on top of that he?s loaded an enormous amount of regulation on top, which increases uncertainty and only exacerbates an already a difficult problem of trying to get our economy to grow in the aftermath of the financial crisis. ? It?s hard to rate that anything but poor.

Despite the economic challenges facing America, Conard remains optimistic about the future of the country. He said workers in the United States are much more productive than their counterparts around the globe. That?s put tens of millions people to work.

?No other high-wage economy has done more for the middle class and working poor than this economy,? he said.

Critics have called Conard a defender of inequality. He responds by pointing to the absurdity of their arguments, which are often grounded in anything but economics. He said the likes of Joseph Stiglitz and Timothy Noah simply don?t see that the economy has shifted. His book is subtitled, ?Why Everything You?ve Been Told About the Economy Is Wrong.?

Conard calls it an innovation-based, risk-oriented, individual, entrepreneurial economy. He pointed to the 13 people who created Instagram and sold it for $1 billion in just two years.

?Innovation is like looking for pieces in a jigsaw puzzle. You have to find a lot of pieces that don?t match to find the one or two pieces that match,? he explained. ?And you have to motivate people to take almost certain failure to get a small amount of success, which has driven our economy forward. And if they don?t see high payoffs for success, it?s unlikely they will take the risk.?

The interview runs about seven minutes. Hosted by Rob Bluey and produced by Brandon Stewart. For more videos from Heritage, subscribe to our YouTube channel.

Keeping The Ecosystem In View When You Are Moving | Greater ...

While many of us don?t take pleasure in relocating, many embrace the ability to start fresh and leave the chaos behind. Not many of us consider the affects to the environment our decision to relocate has. There are numerous environmentally friendly moving companies that can help you move and they also include a number of services that could meet all your relocating needs. If you decide to employ one, you have many great choices to help keep your relocation strain free and kind to the ecosystem.

But even when you have movers on your team, getting started ahead of when you move can make the entire experience less complicated. Finding eco-friendly movers is a good initial step, and something that you can accomplish much less difficult and a lot more eco-friendly by enlisting a website like www.movingcompanies.us. By doing this, you can get several relocating quotes almost immediately without having to waste paper, gas, or using a phone book.

There are alternative methods to cut down what your environmental effect may be. Begin by making separate lists such as; address changes, utilities to be changed, and files that need to be found. Begin your more eco-friendly method of relocating by making that list on the back of a piece of paper you were planning to throw away. If you are done with the list ensure that piece of paper hits the recycle bin. While you?re still in the organizing phases of your move, start going through file cabinets and drawers stuffed with paperwork and statements. Having these items on hand will save many headaches. Destroy sensitive files and recycle published materials you no longer want and surrender it all to the recycle bin. When each cabinet or drawer is empty, thoroughly clean the area while you?re already there.

The more you?re able to re-purpose before you leave, the less you may need to move, meaning the movers you have employed will need to waste less fuel hauling your items. Find a place for unwelcome but still usable items. Tell friends & coworkers who might have a use for those things. Have a yard sale. Every time you find an unwanted object around the house, fix it, and price it right then and there. This will keep you from feeling overwhelmed the day of the sale. Numerous local charities will gladly pick up the leftovers when the sale is done allowing others to benefit.

Remapping gang turf: Math model shows crimes cluster on borders between rivals

Monday, June 25, 2012

A mathematical model that has been used for more than 80 years to determine the hunting range of animals in the wild holds promise for mapping the territories of street gangs, a UCLA-led team of social scientists reports in a new study.

"The way gangs break up their neighborhoods into unique territories is a lot like the way lions or honey bees break up space," said lead author P. Jeffrey Brantingham, a professor of anthropology at UCLA.

Further, the research demonstrates that the most dangerous place to be in a neighborhood packed with gangs is not deep within the territory of a specific gang, as one might suppose, but on the border between two rival gangs. In fact, the highest concentration of conflict occurs within less than two blocks of gang boundaries, the researchers discovered.

The findings appear online today in Criminology, a peer-reviewed scholarly journal published by the American Society of Criminology, the world's largest society of scholars conducting research on crime.

"Maps of gang territories provide police with a better understanding of how to allocate resources," said research co-author George E. Tita, an associate professor of criminology, law and society at UC Irvine. "So figuring out the most accurate approach is really important for effectively deploying law enforcement."

Currently, law enforcement agencies map gang territories based on police observation of such clues as graffiti and where gang members hang out. In these maps, geographic features like streets, parks and schoolyards typically delineate gang territories.

For the Criminology study, the team used Lotka?Volterra equations, which were designed to model the population dynamics of species competing for common resources. Since the 1930s, ecologists have used the equations to study the relationships between competing groups as diverse as bee colonies, troops of chimpanzees and prides of lions.

The equations are based on the principle that competition between groups determines where the boundaries between rivals form, and even a tiny amount of competition is enough to cause territories to form.

"What's at work is a competitive balancing act where both gangs are trying to keep their rival as far away as possible," Brantingham said.

The model the researchers derived from the equation predicted that gang boundaries would form midway between the home bases of rivals and would run in a perpendicular line between them.

The team looked at 13 gangs in the 6.5-square-mile area of Boyle Heights, a densely populated neighborhood on Los Angeles' east side that is bounded by three freeways. Gang activity tends to be confined within the freeway-bounded area.

To determine the home bases for each gang, the researchers relied on a prior study by Tita and his UC Irvine colleagues. The locations of the home bases ranged from a specific street corner to someone's house, a neighborhood business or any other specific location where a gang gathers most frequently.

Using the Lotka?Volterra formula, Brantingham's team drew boundaries between the known gangs. Unlike law enforcement's maps, the resulting effort did not produce gang boundaries that neatly followed streets. Instead, the boundaries ran through the yards of homes and businesses and through alleyways. When the boundaries did land on streets, they were as likely to crisscross them as follow them.

Using police records, the researchers then mapped 563 known gang crimes that occurred between 1999 and 2002 and have been attributed by police to at least one of the 13 gangs. To their surprise, most of the crimes fell on the borders that the model laid between gang territories. When crime locations did deviate from the borders, they did so in a configuration that was consistent with the model. For instance, the theory predicted that 58.8 percent of the crimes would occur within one-fifth of a mile of the border between two gangs ? or just under two blocks ? and 87.5 percent within two-fifths of a mile of the border ? or just over three blocks. Overall, 99.8 percent of crimes could be expected to occur within one mile of the border, according to the theory.

In fact, the team found that 58.2 percent occurred within two blocks of the border and 83.1 percent within just over three blocks of the border; in total, 97.7 percent of the crimes took place within one mile of the border between gangs.

"You would think that we're more complicated than other animals, so a model this simplistic shouldn't work, but I was surprised that it fit as well as it did," said co-author Martin B. Short, an assistant adjunct professor of mathematics at UCLA.

It's no coincidence that Lotka?Volterra equations would have bearing on the configurations of gang territories: The same forces that define territories in the animal kingdom also are at work in all kinds of rivalries between groups of people, the researchers stress.

"The findings match up with what we know about any conflict," Tita said. "Skirmishes tend to occur on disputed boundaries on which individuals, organizations or nation-states seek control."

The researchers plan to compare their gang maps with those derived by law enforcement.

Vizio's Google TV box emerges as the Co-Star Stream Player, goes up for pre-order in July with OnLive gaming

Vizio Co-Star hands-on

Remember the Vizio VAP430 Stream Player that we tried during CES? Half a year later, the Google TV hub is getting full launch details, just in time for Google I/O. Along with receiving the much more elegant title of Co-Star Stream Player, the set-top box now bakes in OnLive streaming game support -- the Co-Star could, in theory, replace a game console for any American with a good broadband connection. Whether or not playing Just Cause 2 on a TV is in the cards, the hub ticks all the 2012 Google TV checkboxes, including a hybrid keyboard and remote, 3D-capable 1080p video and DLNA media sharing. Before you rush to the local big-box store to pick one up, be warned that pre-orders don't start until July, and then only on Vizio's website. The $100 price, however, will make it considerably easier to wait.

The Shattered Mirror

I have two spots left in my roleplay The Shattered mirror. Both are for female characters, one from modern times and one for past fantasy. The one from the past has to play a rouge while the other needs to be a priest. I am looking for someone able to write 100 words or more. Here is the link

10 Steps to Fashioning Your Family History ? Obituarieshelp.org/Blog

We?ve had quite a few new genealogists joining us here at ObituariesHelp.org, and I wanted to welcome them with a brief recap on how to formulate a family tree. We as experienced genealogists remember (I hope!) how daunting a task tracing your family history seemed at first. Where do I start? Who do I look for first? Where do I look? These are just a few of the questions that revolve around your brain when first considering a genealogical project. If you are new to genealogical research, or considering a family history project, following these ten steps, and using the many free resources we provide for researchers, will help you to master the basics you need to build your family legacy. Ready? Okay, let?s get started.

1. Gather Resources From Around Your House
You may not know it, but you could already be sitting on top of a genealogical gold mine! Many researchers have found documents, family heirlooms, and other valuable genealogical information from scouring their basements, attics, old boxes stored in garages form their own homes and those of their relatives. Many older relatives may have kept a family bible; I know my grandmother did, and she had birth dates, death dates, marriage and baptism dates (and sometimes accompanying certificates) stored in hers. You could also find diaries, journals, letters, photo books, all of which can contain important genealogical material.

2. Interview Your Relatives
The collective wisdom of your relatives can help to build a firm, fast family tree. But don?t just barrage them with a bunch of questions designed to accumulate data. Facts are important, and do write them down, but rather talk to your relatives, asking them about their own lives and those of the ancestors they know about. A good idea is to record your conversations, that way you can transcribe them later, separating the facts from the family stories. Before you begin your interviews, read some of our tips on Interviewing Family Members to help you prepare. Whatever you do, make sure that any ?facts? you record can be backed up by official documentation. This brings us to our next step ? writing the information down.

3. Recording the Information
After gathering all of that information, you?ll need to record it in an organized, efficient manner. You can begin with one of our Free Family Tree Templates. We have them beginning at three generations right up to ten or more generations, but we recommend beginning with one of between three and five generations. A three generation chart will include information on you, your parents, and grandparents, while a five generation chart will take you right back to your great-great grandparents. You can download them for FREE, and all the instructions you need can be found in the instructional article located conveniently on the download page.

4. Pick a Target
You will undoubtedly have spaces in your family tree chart the further you go back in time, and once you have recorded all the ancestors you can, it is time to pick one of those empty spaces in your family tree and fill it! This is where your research begins, but to be successful research has to be focused. Choose one ancestor and don?t move on to the next one until you have found the one you?ve selected. There are times when you may reach a dead end, but our Free Insider?s Guide ? The Basics of Tracing Family Genealogy can help you to overcome them.

5. Begin Your Search Online
An online search can help you to find out if there are records of your ancestor somewhere; you may even be able to view some of them from the comfort of your own home on your PC. You can search huge databases on many websites, and many are completely FREE! We have recently updated our database, and now have links to 82 Absolutely Free Genealogy Resources and Records you can begin with.

6. Visit Your Local Library
You don?t want to limit your research to online sources; in fact you can?t complete your family history without visiting brick and mortar institutions. One such valuable genealogical repository is your local or state library. Many local libraries are tied into the database of the state or national libraries, and many have subscriptions to the large commercial genealogy websites which you can use if you?re a member. The US Government maintains a large online database of Government and Public Libraries in the United States while Collections Canada has a similar listing for Canadian libraries. Libraries for England, Scotland, Northern Ireland, and Wales can be found at the UK Public Libraries website.

7. Visit Your Local Family History Center
The LDS Church (Latter-day Saints) has established more than 4,000 Family History Centers around the world, containing the largest genealogical database in existence. Their Online Directory can help you to find the Center nearest you.

8. Copy and Study Genealogical Documents
When you find a record of your ancestor at a library, family history center or online, you?ll want to make or download a copy of it so that you can examine it closely for clues to other ancestors, confirm the existing facts you have, and to preserve it for future use. Locate and make copies of as many birth, death, marriage, and baptism certificates as you can, and then you?ll need to update your Family Tree.

9. Update Your Family Tree
The new information you find will help you to full in those spaces in the family tree chart you began in Step 3. You may need to move on to a bigger chart, but whatever you do, don?t throw away the one you started, Transfer the information from that chart onto your new one, and file it in a folder along with any photos or copies of documents you may have for the ancestors included in it. You may need to refer to that chart again, or make copies of it to give to other relatives who might be interested in your family history.

10. Broaden Your Horizons
As you?re compiling information on your ancestors, you will begin to develop a personal interest in them, or curiosity about them. You might like to visit the land they immigrated from, or the village where they used to live. You will begin to learn of other sources like court records and church records, and may need to visit the repositories at which they are held. This is the stage when you?ll begin to realize just how much fun genealogy can be. As you develop your family tree, you?ll realize that research is not just about gathering facts, but about getting to know your ancestors as people. There?s no better excuse to go for a pint of Guinness in the pub in Ireland your ancestor used to love! You never know, you might meet someone who knew them!

Pixar?s first heroine has been greatly anticipated for a long time, and she has finally arrived in ?Brave??a heartwarming, fable-like tale about courage and pride.

Sassy and as bold as her bright red hair, Scottish princess Merida (voiced by Kelly Macdonald) loves adventure, archery, and freedom. When she is told by her parents, Queen Elinor (Emma Thompson) and King Fergus (Billy Connolly), that she will soon be married off to a son of one of the kingdom?s lords, Merida storms out of the castle and attempts to search for her own fate.

Marriage is the last thing on Merida?s mind, even though her mother has been training her to be queen her entire life.

Things start getting interesting when she crosses paths with a suspicious old woodcarver who claims she can help Merida get her wish that her mother ?will change.?

?Brave? directors Mark Andrews and Brenda Chapman creatively insert plot twists that are sure to entertain and surprise the audience. This storyline is tightly wrapped around the mother-daughter relationship of Merida and the queen, sharing a few reminiscent qualities with ?Tangled.?

The stunning animations done by Pixar studios beautifully portray Scotland?s terrain and bring its people and history to life.

Merida is an immensely fierce and strong character. Her character is complex enough to be appreciated by an older audience but stubborn enough to appeal to younger audience members, who may likely relate to her ?That?s so unfair!? arguments with her mother.

Macdonald provides the perfect accent and energy as Merida?s voice. The entire vocal ensemble is very fitting, including Thompson as the mother struggling to break through the communication barrier between her and her daughter, and Connolly playing the easy-going parent.

Merida?s three younger, mischievous brothers don?t share much of a vocal presence, but their little gags and tricks provide great laughs from beginning to end.

The Scottish authenticity of the animations is breathtaking, and even the cultural jokes are done tastefully. The strong sense of community among the characters and their connection to their Scottish roots is very prominent.

Running Time: 100 minutes

One thing that really stands out about ?Brave? is the musical score written by Patrick Doyle. He captures the essence of Scottish heritage music and still keeps it fresh for modern-day audiences.

A host of excellent qualities can be found in ?Brave??the action, the humor, the characters, the story, and the morality. This fantastic animated picture moves at a quick and steady pace, and it nails the humor without sacrificing the emotion and lessons about pride and family.

?Brave? can easily outshine any other animation feature for originality and heart, but may seem slightly underwhelming only when measured by the audience?s expectations of Pixar and alongside previous classics such as ?Toy Story? and ?Ratatouille.?
