PAPERMAG - Gang Leader-Turned-Filmmaker Elgin James On How ...

little-birds-ELGIN_JAMES_rgb.jpgTalking to buoyant Little Birds director Elgin James, you might not guess that only months ago, he was released from a maximum security prison, where he was serving a one-year sentence after being convicted of extortion, stemming from an incident that occurred when he was the leader of an "anti-racist punk rock gang" called FSU (or Friends Stand United).? It's a past that he's happily put behind him in real life but one that still informs his filmmaking.

James felt strongly that the best way to tell his story was by depicting themes central to his life -- the push-pull between wanting to grow up versus the safety of remaining a kid; the allure of peer pressure; the desire to find a family and security among your peers -- through the vulnerable lens of female adolescents.? And that's not to say there aren't some direct parallels in his debut film. Little Birds centers on two teenage girls growing up in the desolate California town of Salton Sea (played by Juno Temple and Kay Panabaker) and who run away to L.A. after meeting a group of street punks. Watching the girls quickly get caught up in their new friends' dangerous lives, one can't help but wonder the extent to which some of the more harrowing scenes were lifted from James's own experiences as a homeless youth in Boston.??

In this way, James manages to tell his own tale while creating an entirely new story, touching on themes of friendship, growing up and feeling lost, in the process. And, with the New York release of the film this week, James chatted with us about his life, his movie and what's next for him as a director. Read on.

Tell me about your background.

I grew up on a farm in rural New England, outside of Boston. My parents adopted me and they were civil rights activists and they marched with Martin Luther King Jr.? They were freedom riders. They were both white but they put their money where their mouths were and they were adopting mixed race and black children at the time. I was like the only brown-skinned kid for miles and I grew up getting called n***** all the time [by others in the town]. I never assumed what that meant.? It wasn't until I was about 11 years old that I finally found punk rock and I was just like, "This is why I'm different. Everyone hates me because I have a mohawk, not because I have brown skin." And growing up, I always felt so bad for my mom that she had to walk around with this brown-skinned kid -- I felt almost embarrassed for her but it's obvious she didn't feel that at all.

All I wanted to do was get out into the world. I moved to Boston and I was homeless with my friend at the time.

Were you just sleeping on the streets?

We were crashing on the streets. We'd find abandoned buildings and stuff. This was the time when there was a recession so there'd be empty apartments that we'd break into and start squatting in.

Did your parents know what you were up to?

My dad had his own issues. My father was a pacifist but that was something he only afforded to people outside of the family. He had his own disappointments and things that he expected to happen, especially with a lot of activism and none of that came true. And he had his own demons with chemicals.

So I just got lost [in Boston]. This was when the neo-Nazi skinhead thing was around the country and [my friends and I] were total fodder for them and we had the Latin Kings, so there were angry Puerto Rican kids [against us] and so our only uniting thing was punk rock.?? A bunch of these tiny, skinny kids started our own thing and we became a 'family.' [James would go on to found a gang called FSU.] Before that, I felt like the world always kicked me and the world had its foot on my neck. So I started to kick back twice as hard and it stopped. You know, just fighting against bullies. We would rob drug dealers. But I was still such a mama's boy -- and my mom was a Quaker and she instilled in me [a sense of] community -- so I was like, "We have to give half this money to charity."

Like Robin Hood...

Like Robin Hood, exactly. And that's what I was trying to hold on to but basically it was a lie.? When my mom got sick, I got to spend the last few weeks with her and she was like, "You know, it's not too late for a second chance."? I made all these promises to her that I was going to change and once I lost her, I ended up leaving Boston with my girlfriend at the time -- who's now my wife -- and put everything I had in a van and drove across the country. We knew no one in Los Angeles but I was like, "I want to make movies, I want to do something." And so I went to L.A. and it was still hard for me. Our gang [FSU] had spread out across the country at that point.? Lives were lost in the name of what we had started fifteen years ago. It kind of grew into something else -- something more serious.

[In L.A.] I met some people that wanted to do a story about my life and I wasn't going to write or direct it. [We were in the studio offices] and I was just there as window dressing to chime in. I would be like, "Yeah so then I hit him with a bat and then I did this," and then all of a sudden [the execs would be] like, "And then at the end of Act II, Elgin's mother dies." And everyone goes, "Aw."? It was like, "This is my fucking life."I would come home sick to my stomach and my wife was like, "You need to do your own thing." And so I did.? Everyone was like, "You're making the biggest mistake of your life -- you're an idiot." My wife was the only one who believed in it at the time.

When you sat down to write the script yourself, why did you decide to make the protagonists female when it was a story inspired by your own life?

I was so worried because at first it was a project about my life story and [I was worried] it would glorify it and glamorize it.? When I was going to try to write it myself, I thought that 15-year-old girls and women in general are so much more interesting than men because they're so much more complicated. It became a story about people needing things and not being able to verbalize them and these missed connections throughout. [Writing a script about young female protagonists] let me go to a more vulnerable place than if I had wrote about myself or even if it was about guys, who are more guarded and protective. Lily -- who Juno [Temple] plays -- is me wanting to get the hell out of this little town in New England; Alison is the part of me that's older and who would give anything to go back to that town when my mom was still alive and would call me in for dinner.

And how did you choose to set the film in Salton Sea rather than New England?

My wife and I had gone to Joshua Tree [National Park] and on the way back we decided to go to Salton Sea and once we got there, we saw this little girl riding around on the back of her boyfriend's BMX bike with a cigarette pack in her sleeve. I was like, "Oh man. That's the movie and that's how I am going to tell the story."? It was the perfect setting for how I felt and also the people there. It was also really important to me how we were showing poverty.? [Salton Sea residents have] a kind of dignity.

Can you talk about how issues of race came into play in the movie and as a director, what your intentions were in shooting some of those racially-charged scenes?

For me, having grown up as mixed race and passing on either side and not fitting in on either side, you find out how people really talk and the things that they really say.? To me, there's the situation with JR Bourne's character at the end who comes in and turns our whole movie upside down. You have him coming into a situation where we know what he's walking into and we empathize with him but I always want to keep people on their toes.? You're empathizing with him on ne level and then you hear him say the worst thing you could say, "Your n***** boyfriend."?? When he says that, he's feeling powerless and he's trying to regain his power by putting someone else down. And his biggest fear is that of a "big, black guy" and he'll call him a n***** because he wants to take back that control.

The way you portrayed violence was also distinct, choosing to depict it from the victim's point of view with camera angles etc.?

It was scary because once I was changing my life around and becoming committed to non-violence, I thought, "Violence is a part of story-telling. How do we do it without making it gratuitous?"? We decided to show it through the victim's viewpoint so even when the kid gets hit with the skateboard, it's really Kay's reaction you remember. Violence isn't satisfactory or entertaining when you're the victim of it. [We also wanted] to show it in daylight. People always talk about how graphic that last scene in the film is -- that it's so sexually graphic -- but there's no nudity. There's nothing shown.

You've set it up so that viewers squirm because they can predict what will happen next.

We put it right out there, in the open. Even with the fights, the way we showed them, we worked really hard on cutting them. We'd show it with the Hollywood-type sound effects and we'd say, "How come this doesn't feel real?"? And then what we actually ended up doing was taking away sound effects and all of a sudden, people cringe every time we show [those scenes] because it feels very human.

And since we're on the topic of violence, I know you're quite candid about your own violent past catching up with you while you were making this movie.??

In 2009, I had done the script and had been to the [Sundance] labs and then I got arrested by a dozen FBI agents on a five-year-old charge.? I went from getting my movie fully-financed to being in prison, not knowing what was going to happen. I had no idea that there was this case.

So if this was in 2009, when did you actually make the movie? Did you not serve your sentence until after the movie was shot?

Yeah, exactly. We shot in 2010 and then edited it and it premiered at Sundance in 2011 and then I got sentenced in March of 2011.?

You've mentioned having a fear of slipping back to your former lifestyle and negative thoughts and feelings.? Did any of those feelings resurface while you were serving your prison term?

All the time. At first I was like, "This is such a great challenge to not tap into this" and then a couple months later it was like a drunk in a liquor store. That was the hardest thing I've ever done.? I read 101 books and I tried to not think about that crap.? Also, Imagine Entertainment and Brian Grazer were so incredible and supportive and loyal to me [during that time]. They set up this deal that I would have when I got out to write a screenplay for them. Working on that gave me fuel and that's how I made it through that year.

What can you share about that project?

It's a script about kids growing up in the Boyle Heights section of Los Angeles and about a kid trying to find his own release through art.? [Another project I'm working on is] with Juno about these hobo, train-hopping kids. Juno's psyched because she won't have to bathe or shave for months.

Given your own background, it's natural that you'd focus on films with darker, dramatic themes but do you ever see yourself expanding to something like comedy?

[There's a project with] Pharrell and we're talking about doing a musical. I don't like musicals but there's something in there and collaboration is very important to me.? And if I'm going to do a musical, I'll definitely do a comedy.

Little Birds, starring Juno Temple, Kay Panabaker, Kate Bosworth and Leslie Mann, is out now in select New York City theaters, expanding to theaters around the country soon.? For more information, visit their website.

Assistant United States Attorney Steven Dollear speaks at a news conference at the federal courthouse Wednesday, Aug. 29, 2012, in Chicago after a federal judge sentenced Hanjuan Jin to four years in prison for stealing trade secrets from Motorola. (AP) ? A federal judge sentenced a Chinese-born American Wednesday to four years in prison for stealing millions of dollars in trade secrets from Motorola, describing her as a soft-spoken, unassuming woman who carried out a "very purposeful raid" on the company in the dead of night.

In a barely audible voice and heavily accented English, 41-year-old Hanjuan Jin told the judge she was "so sorry for what happened" and pleaded for a second chance. Her lawyers had argued that she took the files merely to refresh her knowledge after a long absence from work and was not spying for China. They appealed for leniency and asked that Jin receive probation, in part because of her poor health.

But U.S. District Judge Ruben Castillo said it was important to send a message that would deter others with access to trade secrets from siphoning off vital information.

"In today's world, the most valuable thing that anyone has is technology. ... The most important thing this country can do is protect its trade secrets," Castillo said.

Jin, who worked as a software engineer for Motorola Inc. for nine years, was stopped during a random security search at Chicago's O'Hare International Airport on Feb. 28, 2007, before she could board a flight to China. Prosecutors say she was carrying $31,000 and more than 1,000 confidential Motorola documents, many stored on a laptop, four external hard drives, thumb drives and other devices.

Castillo found Jin guilty in February of stealing trade secrets but acquitted her of more serious charges of economic espionage. The judge said the evidence fell short of proving beyond a reasonable doubt that she stole the information to ultimately benefit the Chinese military, as prosecutors alleged.

At Wednesday's sentencing, however, Castillo noted that Jin had also possessed confidential Chinese military documents and was identified as an employee of China-based Sun Kaisens, a telecommunications firm that U.S. government attorneys say develops products for China's military.

A person would "have to have their head in the sand" not to see that her theft could have benefited ? albeit perhaps indirectly ? China's military and government, Castillo said. He concluded in his sentencing remarks that Jin, who became a naturalized U.S. citizen days before the theft, must have at least been willing to betray her adopted country.

He also referred to the theft as "a very purposeful raid."

"It is a raid in no uncertain terms. It is a raid to steal technology. ... You conducted this raid in the dead of night when you knew that there was a lesser chance you'd get caught," he said.

Prosecutors alleged that among the secrets she carried were descriptions of a walkie-talkie type feature on Motorola cellphones that prosecutors argued would have benefited the Chinese military.

"What the defendant took was Motorola's playbook," Assistant U.S. Attorney Steven Dollear said in court.

Afterward, Dollear told reporters he was happy with the sentence, believing it would serve as a deterrent and encourage companies to pursue justice without fear that their trade secrets would be revealed in court.

Jin's lawyers refused to comment after the sentencing.

They have maintained that Jin was not an agent for China and sought to portray her as a woman with a remarkable against-the-odds success story who simply made one serious mistake for which she was overwhelmingly remorseful.

Born into an impoverished family in rural China, Jin managed to excel academically, they said, and earned a master's degree in physics from the University of Notre Dame.

"There's no question that Ms. Jin did something wrong, something illegal," her attorney, John Murphy, told the judge. But before and after the theft, she led a law-abiding and even inspirational life, he said.

He noted she also recently overcame a "near-death experience" with meningitis and tuberculosis, and battled cancer. The judge took her health into account in deciding on a sentence.

Jin must report to prison on Oct. 25. She also has to pay a $20,000 fine and will be subject to three years of supervision upon her release.

Motorola Inc. has since become Motorola Solutions Inc., in suburban Schaumburg.

JayBird intros Freedom Sprint: the JF3 Bluetooth stereo fitness headset gets 40% smaller

JayBird intros Freedom Spirit Bluetooth stereo headset the JF3 gets 40% lighter

It's been quite a while since we last heard from JayBird, but now it's back with another set of Bluetooth in-ear headphones for fitness activities. Unveiled and available today, the new Freedom Sprint ($130, pictured right) joins the ranks of the company's Freedom JF3 headset ($99) -- it's essentially the same Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR headset, albeit with 40-percent less of a footprint for the earpieces (33 x 16 x 8 mm vs. 44 x 19 x 9 mm). The petite size naturally means a smaller internal battery (rated for 4.5 hours, compared to the original's six), but JayBird let us know that the Sprint is acoustically identical to the JF3. While size is the main focus, there are also a few other improvements being toted in the Sprint -- it sports a micro-USB port for charging (changed from mini-USB), a softer cable between the buds, an inconspicuous notification LED, enhanced call quality and the multifunction button has been repositioned to the top of one of the earpieces (the JF3's is on the outside). Sounds like the Sprint could be the $130 ticket if Bluetooth, small size and a secure fit are your main concerns for a pair of in-ears. You'll find more images in the gallery below and further details at the source link.

China Can Take Ford To $12

?

NEW YORK - MARCH 31: President and CEO of Fo...

Ford Motors is betting big on China. The automaker is launching and developing cars for the affluent as well as the more price sensitive Chinese customers. Ford is also gearing up to launch its luxury brand Lincoln in the country from 2014 onward. This represents a big investment in addition to the $5 billion the automaker has already spent in the country since 2006.

It will not be easy for Ford though. The luxury brand will attract an import tax of 25% since the Lincoln cars were not manufactured in China initially.?Chinese vehicles sales growth has slowed down in 2012 even though the country overtook the U.S. last year to become the largest auto market in the world. However, luxury sales in China still trails those in the U.S. but are expected to surpass them by 2020.

At the same time, Ford is developing a low cost model in its Hangzhou plant in Eastern China which is due to begin production from 2015 onward. Currently, the cheapest model that Ford offers is Ford Fiesta, priced at around $13,000, 30% more expensive than GM?s Sail. Thus, offering a low cost model is critical to Ford?s long term sustainability in the country. Ford only has 6 models in China currently (compared to GM?s 30) but is adding a seventh model, the Kuga compact SUV by the end of the year. In total, Ford plans to launch 15 new car models by 2015.?The automaker also plans to double the workforce as well as the number of dealerships in China by 2015

Increasing Presence

Ford has traditionally lagged behind other major autos such as General Motors, Volkswagen and Toyota Motors in China primarily because it was too slow to enter the Chinese market. In 2011, Ford could boast a market share of only 2.5% in the country; trailing Volkswagen?s 18% and GM?s 10%.

But Ford is going full throttle with investments in China and Asia/Pacific. Currently, eight plants are being built in the region to expand capacity with the most recent being the decision to invest $760 million in a manufacturing plant in Hangzhou to cash in on the growing opportunity in a nation whose auto market Ford expects to surge to 30 million vehicles by 2020 from 18.5 million in 2011.

We have a price estimate of $12 for Ford Motors, which is about 30% more than the current market price.

Renal sympathetic denervation improves physical and mental health ...

Renal sympathetic denervation improves anxiety, depression, quality of life and stress in patients with resistant hypertension, according to research presented at ESC Congress 2012 by Dr Denise Fischer from Saarland University Hospital.

Arterial hypertension is often associated with several psychological comorbidities, such as anxiety and panic disorders, leading to impaired quality of life. Catheter-based renal sympathetic denervation (RDN) is a novel treatment option for patients with resistant hypertension and has been shown to reduce local and whole-body sympathetic activity and blood pressure (BP).

The aim of the present study was to analyze quality of life, arousal level, anxiety and depression, sleeping quality, intensity of headache and stress tolerance in patients with resistant hypertension before and after RDN.

RDN was performed in 173 patients with resistant hypertension (BP 174/88?23/13mmHg and taking a median of 5 antihypertensive drugs) aged 63?10 years (53% male). Psychological status, intensity of headache, sleeping quality and stress tolerance were documented before and 3 months after RDN.

Patients rated their physical and mental state and arousal level on a 0-100% scale. Stress was induced by a multi tasking situation (Determination Task) and the total number of correct reactions, omissions and commission errors (responding to stimuli where it is not required) were recorded. Assessments were made of depression and anxiety using the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) and of quality of life using the Short Form-12 Health Survey (SF-12). Insomnia and the level of regeneration achieved during sleep were assessed using a 0-100% scale and intensity of headache was measured by a visual analogous scale (VAS).

Three months after RDN was performed, office blood pressure decreased by 17/7 mmHg (p

At baseline 32.2% of patients suffered from sleeping disorders and 60% suffered from headaches. Three months after RDN, sleeping quality improved (p

"In patients with resistant hypertension overactivity of the sympathetic nervous system causes hyperarousal, leading to higher anxiety and stress levels," said Dr Fischer. "Renal denervation reduces office blood pressure and resting heart rate and does not impair psychological processes."

She added: "Renal denervation may have a positive effect on psychological processes, stress perception and processing as well as quality of life. It improves sleeping quality and may reduce the intensity of headache."

Future research should investigate long term effects of RDN on psychological processes, quality of life, rehospitalisation and mortality rates in a larger cohort of patients.

The Dragon's Tales: Carboniferous? Triassic? Arthopod Found...in ...

An international team of scientists has discovered the oldest record of arthropods?invertebrate animals that include insects, arachnids, and crustaceans?preserved in amber. The specimens, one fly and two mites found in millimeter-scale droplets of amber from northeastern Italy, are about 100 million years older than any other amber arthropod ever collected. The group's findings, which are published today in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, pave the way for a better evolutionary understanding of the most diverse group of organisms in the world.

"Amber is an extremely valuable tool for paleontologists because it preserves specimens with microscopic fidelity, allowing uniquely accurate estimates of the amount of evolutionary change over millions of years," said corresponding author David Grimaldi, a curator in the American Museum of Natural History's Division of Invertebrate Zoology and a world authority on amber and fossil arthropods.

Globules of fossilized resin are typically called amber. Amber ranges in age from the Carboniferous (about 340 million years ago) to about 40,000 years ago, and has been produced by myriad plants, from tree ferns to flowering trees, but predominantly by conifers. Even though arthropods are more than 400 million years old, until now, the oldest record of the animals in amber dates to about 130 million years. The newly discovered arthropods break that mold with an age of 230 million years. They are the first arthropods to be found in amber from the Triassic Period.

The amber droplets, most between 2-6 millimeters long, were buried in outcrops high in the Dolomite Alps of northeastern Italy and excavated by Eugenio Ragazzi and Guido Roghi of the University of Padova. About 70,000 of the miniscule droplets were screened for inclusions ?encased animal and plant material?by a team of German scientists led by Alexander Schmidt, of Georg-August University, G?ttingen, resulting in the discovery of the three arthropods. The tiny arthropods were studied by Grimaldi and Evert Lindquist, an expert on gall mites at Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada in Ottawa.

Two of the specimens are new species of mites, named Triasacarus fedelei and Ampezzoa triassica. They are the oldest fossils in an extremely specialized group called Eriophyoidea that has about 3,500 living species, all of which feed on plants and sometimes form abnormal growth called "galls." The ancient gall mites are surprisingly similar to ones seen today.

"You would think that by going back to the Triassic you'd find a transitional form of gall mite, but no," Grimaldi said. "Even 230 million years ago, all of the distinguishing features of this family were there?a long, segmented body; only two pairs of legs instead of the usual four found in mites; unique feather claws, and mouthparts."

The ancient mites likely fed on the leaves of the tree that ultimately preserved them, a conifer in the extinct family Cheirolepidiaceae. Although about 97 percent of today's gall mites feed on flowering plants, Triasacarus fedelei and Ampezzoa triassica existed prior to the appearance and rapid radiation of flowering plants. This finding reveals the evolutionary endurance of the mites.

"We now know that gall mites are very adaptable," Grimaldi said. "When flowering plants entered the scene, these mites shifted their feeding habits, and today, only 3 percent of the species live on conifers. This shows how gall mites tracked plants in time and evolved with their hosts."

The third amber specimen, a fly, cannot be identified because, outside of the insect's antennae, its body parts were not well preserved. But now that the researchers have shown that amber preserved Triassic arthropods, they are eager to find more specimens.

Social Security: Trends, differences in lifestyle can affect benefits of ...

TERRE HAUTE ? Aug. 26 is known as Women?s Equality Day.

On that date in 1920, the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution was signed, giving women the right to vote.

Social Security treats men and women equally. Men and women with identical earning histories are treated exactly the same.

However, there are things women in particular should know about Social Security. Although treated equally by Social Security, there are trends and differences in lifestyle that can affect benefits.

For example, women tend to care for many people: spouses, children and parents. Taking time away from the workplace to care for a newborn child or aging parent can have an impact on your future Social Security benefits.

Also, despite significant strides through the years, women are more likely to earn less over a lifetime than men.

Women are less often covered by private retirement plans, and they are more dependent on Social Security in their retirement years.

And, women tend to live about five years longer than men, which means more years depending on Social Security and other retirement income or savings.

If a woman is married to a man who earns significantly more than she does, it is likely she will qualify for a larger benefit amount on his record than on her own.

Want to learn more?

Visit the website?s women?s page at www.social

security.gov/women. Follow the link on that page to our publication, What Every Woman Should Know.

You can read it online, print a copy, or listen to it on audio.

The Social Security website provides alternate media as well to reach as many women as possible and to provide the information the way you?d like to receive it.

Learning about your future Social Security benefits and how men and women are treated just the same in the eyes of Social Security: what better way to celebrate Women?s Equality Day?

(AP) ? Scientists have found a few ancient insects frozen in what is Earth's oldest bug trap.

Two microscopic mites and much of one fly were discovered preserved in tree resin. At 230 million years old, they are about 100 million years older than the previous record for bugs trapped in amber.

While older insects have been found in rock fossils, researcher David Grimaldi of New York's American Museum of Natural History says these are better preserved.

Scientists found them stuck among 70,000 droplets of amber unearthed in northeastern Italy. The mites are too small to be seen with the naked eye and the fly is a tad tinier than a fruit fly.

The discovery was published Monday in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Israeli rabbi calls for prayers for Iran's destruction

JERUSALEM (Reuters) - An influential Israeli rabbi has called for prayers for Iran's destruction, a week after Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu appeared to court his support for a possible attack on a nuclear program Israel sees as an existential threat.

The sermon by Rabbi Ovadia Yosef added to a flurry of recent rhetoric from Israeli officials that has raised international concern that Israel, widely believed to be the Middle East's only atomic power, might attack Iran's nuclear facilities.

"(When) we ask God to 'bring an end to our enemies', we should be thinking about Iran, those evil ones who threaten Israel. May the Lord destroy them," Yosef was quoted as saying by Israeli media on Sunday.

Last week, Netanyahu sent his national security adviser to brief Yosef, 91, on Iran's nuclear activities in what was widely seen as an effort to win his backing for any future military strike, possibly before the U.S. presidential vote in November.

Yosef, a former Israeli chief rabbi, is the spiritual leader of the ultra-Orthodox Shas party, a key member of Netanyahu's governing coalition.

Netanyahu is frustrated that Western diplomacy to try to force Iran to rein in its program has so far proved fruitless.

He said on Friday that Iran, whose leaders have threatened Israel's destruction, had made "accelerated progress towards achieving nuclear weapons".

Yosef issued his call in a sermon late on Saturday in which he said Iran should be included in a traditional Jewish New Year blessing next month over food in which God is asked to strike down Israel's enemies.

Netanyahu's security cabinet, which Israeli officials have said is divided over the question of launching a go-it-alone attack on Iran, includes a Shas minister as one of its eight members. Iran says it is enriching uranium for peaceful purposes.

Yosef wields significant influence over Shas's lawmakers, who seek his guidance on policy.

In the past, the Baghdad-born Yosef has stirred controversy by likening Palestinians to snakes, calling for Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas to "perish from this world" and describing non-Jews as "born only to serve us".

But he has also spoken out in favor of Israel ceding occupied land for peace with the Palestinians in order to end conflict and save Jewish lives.
