ROYAL OAK, Michigan ? The 2012 Woodward Dream Cruise, dubbed the world's biggest one-day car event, is revving up again after several years of scaling back during the recession.
Chevrolet is beefing up its presence at the event with special exhibits for the 60th anniversary of the Corvette, Detroit graffiti artist Shades painting a 'Vette-inspired mural and an ice-cream social for owners of the Chevrolet Volt.
An estimated 50,000 classic and vintage cars are expected at the August 18 event. Corporate sponsorships of the Woodward Dream Cruise dwindled in the depths of the recession. But new sponsorships include Fifth Third Bank and Auctions America.
Chevrolet is the presenting sponsor of the event. On Monday, Chevrolet detailed plans for the Dream Cruise, including the deployment of a "Chevy Certified Service Rescue Squad" of Silverado trucks that will provide assistance to vehicle owners of any brand who need assistance with flat tires, dead batteries or other "light repairs."
The nine metro Detroit communities hosting the event along Woodward Avenue have restored or added to their exhibits this year, according to media reports.
There is also a new non-auto event that is being described as the "dream cruise for your feet." The Cruise In Shoes fundraiser is a 5K race that encourages participants to run while wearing '50s costumes. Muscle cars will be required to stay on the sidelines for 40 minutes on the day of the Dream Cruise to accommodate runners.
Organizers say the Woodward Dream Cruise draws 1.5 million people and cars from as far away as Japan and the former Soviet Union. The event started in 1995 when organizers wanted to relive the nostalgic days of the '50s and '60s, when "youth, music and Motor City steel roamed Woodward Avenue, America's first highway."
Inside Line says: The Woodward Dream Cruise has been a barometer of economic times. It's encouraging to hear that the 2012 event appears to be in robust form.
