Celebrations to mark Lordship Recreation Ground winning royal approval saw the formal presentation of the Fields In Trust QE11 plaque and a youth sports day in the park.
More than 100 young people, local residents, and council parks staff attended the event on April 2 as the plaque was unveiled by Haringey's Cabinet Member for the Environment, Cllr Nilgun Canver, and the Friends of Lordship Recreation Ground.
The sports day marked the start of an Easter sports programme and celebrated the range of activities that now take place on the newly improved sports field, which has hosted games and athletics for more than 30 years.
Many Thousands of local youngsters have played regular football at Lordship Rec over the past three decades, with many going on to semi-professional and professional status. For a few years in the 1980s, the park also saw regular cricket matches organised by the Tottenham Cricket Project.
Haringey Council has secured ?10,000 through Fields in Trust, ?5,000 of which will go towards funding a second phase of drainage at the football fields and ?5,000 to future community programmes and training.
Cllr Nilgun Canver presented the QE11 plaque to Clasford Stirling, founder member of Broadwater United FC and Dave Morris of the Friends of Lordship Rec.
Cllr Canver, said:
"The council in partnership with the Rec Users Forum has seen limited resources put to brilliant use by all the volunteers who give up their time to protect and enhance this wonderful resource whether by event planning, producing forum newsletters, organising fairs and nature walks, helping design the landscape or equipment, campaigning for funding or coaching local teams.
"The council and the community's joint efforts have resulted in an open space that is a truly awesome community asset. Now that the Rec has QE11 status it will be protected as an open space for ever."
Dave Morris, Chair of the Lordship Rec Users Forum, said:
"The tremendous progress and improvements made in Lordship Rec are the result of years of community/council dedication and partnership-working, backed by access to the additional resources needed to make it possible. We encourage all local residents to come and enjoy the new facilities."
Last summer in recognition of the importance of the sports field and of all the efforts to regenerate the whole park, Lordship Rec was granted QE11 status by the national 'Fields In Trust' organisation, giving it protection for all time as a public green space for sports and activities.
In December 2012 Lordship Rec was national Runner Up award for the 'Most Improved' of the 1,500 QE11 spaces in the country.
