Scottsdale Mall in Scottsdale AZ includes a number of galleries and arts attractions
All work and no play may have made Jack a dull boy, but it certainly didn?t make him a trendsetter. ?The value of play can be seen in some new numbers from the U.S. Census Bureau analyzed by bizjournals.com.
The report finds nearly 2 million people employed in the arts, entertainment and recreation sector, generating an annual payroll of $59 billion. That doesn?t count the billions of dollars spent on everything from movie tickets to sporting events to concerts to amusement park admission.
No surprise that the megalopolises of New York and Los Angeles lead all metros in arts and entertainment-related employment. LA, after all is the epicenter of the film and television industry, and New York is a global media and arts and culture capital.
But the arts, entertainment and recreation segment has made huge inroads in metros of all size. In the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex, more than 36,000 people work in the nearly 1,600 businesses in the arts and entertainment sector.
Fort Worth has developed a?collection of world-renowned galleries?that draw more than 1.5 million visitors a year?and a signature concert hall that houses its symphony, ballet, opera and the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition and Cliburn Concerts. More important, the galleries, concert hall and other arts venues form a powerful quality of place dynamic that cements the city?s reputation as a highly desirable place to live as well as work.
In the Charlotte USA region, arts, entertainment and recreation have taken a starring role in the region?s economy. Film and television production is a significant economic sector in Charlotte, contributing an estimated $500 million economic impact. Auto racing, one ?of the most popular spectator sports in the nation, is also an economic driver in the region. Some??200 businesses employing more than 20,000 people support the motorsports industry in Cabarrus County NC alone.
Nashville is the capital of country music, of course, but the region has developed into a center of recording and performance well beyond a single genre. Nearly 1,100 businesses are identified in the arts, entertainment and recreations sector, paying an average annual wage of nearly $54,000. The Nashville region has made its arts and culture assets a key part of its talent recruitment efforts, one of the foundations of its overall economic development strategy.
The impact of arts, culture and entertainment on quality of place can?t be understated. Communities that ignore the segment or overlook its value risk losing out on talent and, increasingly, on being left out of consideration by companies that want to be sure all of the infrastructure is in place to draw the right type of people for the jobs they have.
Often though, arts, culture and recreation are viewed as ?nice things to have? ? the soft side frill that is more icing than cake. As the numbers show, it?s a segment that creates a substantial economic impact, and the presence of those assets can draw the right people that draws investment and more jobs.
