Oppose View That Women Should Not Leave Abusive Relationships ...

Human Rights, Petitions ? By Victoria Rosenthal on March 26, 2012 12:19 pm

Target: Wisconsin Lawmaker Don Pridemore

Goal: To oppose the belief that domestic violence is not sufficient grounds for a divorce

Don Pridemore is a Wisconsin lawmaker that believes that women should not leave an abusive relationship, especially a marriage. It is unfortunate that this man believes he is an expert on abuse and understanding relationships, as his mentality is far from helpful. This man is quite possibly the worst person to be giving advice to abused women as he states that women should not leave an abusive man, but rather try and remember why she loved him in the first place. This mentality is very backwards in preventing dangerous and unhealthy relationships. People like Don Pridemore need to better understand how difficult it is to be in an abusive relationship and that getting out safely is of utmost importance every single time.

Not only does Don Pridemore believe that abused women should attempt to continue and make their relationships work, he also supports Wisconsin puppy mills and is the co-sponsor to a bill that?declares?single women are the cause of child abuse. It is quite obvious that his beliefs and morals are not productive to solving any domestic violence issues, yet he is under the impression that he can be genuinely helpful. Ignorance can be very dangerous in a situation like this, and it is important that people like Pridemore are better educated to such important issues. Stating that single women are not capable of disciplining their children is ludicrous. Any mother is capable of providing just as structured of a home as a family with a?traditional?father figure. Promoting ideals like this are harmful to women who are single parenting and women that are subject to abuse from their partners.

Education is the best way to prevent mentalities like this from becoming viral. It is important to confront these people to understand why they feel this way to conduct a productive way to change their minds about what they believe. This is not an easy task, but the only way to ensure people understand issues that they can not directly relate to. Don Pridemore is a perfect example of someone who believes far too much in their own thinking when they do not understand the issues they are so willing to advise others about. This dangerous mentality must be fixed appropriately whenever possible to ultimately stop issues like domestic violence.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Don Pridemore,

Is is very unfortunate to hear that you believe women in abusive relationships should put an extra effort in to remember why they loved their partner in the first place. That advice proves how completely blindsided you are to women suffering in violent relationships every day. There is not any reason why men should be physically abusing their partners and this is a dangerous position for women to be in. Your mentality is the type of wall that has facilitated domestic violence to continue happening. Your beliefs are directly feeding into the mentalities of the men who are actually abusing their partners.

Please try to better understand the position women are placed in when stuck in an abusive relationship. Educating yourself to an issue you are so willing to advice other people on will probably open your eyes and help you formulate a better, more understanding take on this horrible issue plaguing women across the country.

Sincerely,
