Coast Guard evacuates crew of drifting oil rig near Kodiak, Alaska

After raging seas and fierce winds settled down Saturday afternoon, the Coast Guard finally evacuated the crew of a traveling Shell Alaska oil rig that had started drifting near Kodiak, Alaska.

For the second straight day, the Coast Guard had battled to rescue 18 crew members of the drifting Kulluk oil rig after efforts to tow the rig and its broken-down tug had failed several times.

But by late Saturday, repeated deliveries of engine parts and technicians by Coast Guard chopper had helped bring the stalled tug's engines back to life. And a dampening of what had been 20- to 30-foot waves and a drop in the 30-knot winds allowed teams to stabilize the rolling rig, evacuate the crew and bring it under tow.

"Now that the crew is all evacuated, we will accelerate the speed of the tow and increase the margin between the vessels and landfall," said Shell Alaska spokesman Curtis Smith.

The Kulluk oil rig was headed south to Seattle on Thursday after its first drilling season in the U.S. Arctic. But a tow line between the rig and its 360-foot tug, the Aiviq, separated, leaving the Kulluk adrift. The tug was initially able to get a new tow line established but then lost power to all of its engines, leaving both vessels floating free as weather in the North Pacific worsened.

Shell sent out two more vessels, and the Coast Guard responded by sending the 282-foot Cutter Alex Haley to offer assistance. The Haley got both vessels under tow early Friday, but then the cutter reported that its line had separated, too. It tangled in one of the ship's propellers, and the cutter was forced to return to port for repairs.

The Coast Guard launched two more cutters, the Hickory and the Spar, and sent up an HC-130 to monitor the situation. Jayhawk choppers began ferrying supplies to the crippled tug.

When Shell's other vessels arrived, they, too, attempted a tow but also experienced failures.

"The weather on scene is testing the limits of our Coast Guard crews," Coast Guard Rear Admiral Thomas Ostebo in Juneau, Alaska, said in a statement late Saturday.

The biggest fear was that of the safety of the crew of the Kulluk, which was pitching in the roiling seas, making any attempt to hoist people into waiting helicopters dangerous.

Coast Guard officials also feared a grounding of the tug, the rig or any of the assisting vessels could spill fuel into the fragile marine waters off Kodiak.

But a drop in the winds and quieting of the seas changed everything Saturday.

"The weather laid down, so we had a safe window," Smith said. "We used the opportunity to evacuate."

Mechanics also got the Aiviq's engines working again, and the calmer seas allowed the tug and a second Shell vessel to each get a tow line around the Kulluk. The two began pulling the rig farther from Kodiak.

"Given the events, we're going to evaluate and recalibrate the tow assemblies on these vessels before we continue the journey to Seattle," Smith said. "We're in no rush."

For good reason. The National Weather Service late Saturday called for another night of high winds and rough seas.

I'm very excited for this.

Hello! I'm not too keen on writing forum introduction posts, so I've adapted the outline from this site.

1) What's your username? Why'd you pick that username?

Zeprimus - it was a character name I came up with out of the blue while playing an MMO and it's stuck with ever since.

2) How'd you find this place? Google? Why'd you look it up on Google or whatever?

I did find this on Google, by searching for 'roleplaying forums'. I found some pretty interesting other choices, but I'm not looking for that kind of roleplaying. When I was younger, I did some forum roleplaying. I'm back for more because it is enjoyable, simply put.

3) How long have you roleplayed on forums or chat? On what sites? Did you start with tabletop games or such?

I roleplayed in various short-lived forum based RPs for a couple years when I was in high school, and to be honest I can't remember the name of the site now (it may be offline, it's been almost a decade). Since I was in 5th or 6th grade or so, I've played D&D and GURPS amongst a few others with friends. I've also done some in-game RPing in MMOs, LOTRO, Rift, and WoW specifically.

4) In coming to RPG, what've you been looking for specifically? A new home for roleplay? Better roleplay?

I'm looking for any amount of roleplay. Due to life, I'm not able to run or join an active table-top group right now or for the foreseeable future. Plus, forum-based roleplaying allows me to do what I love - write.

5) What kinds of roleplay are you interested in? Fantasy? Sci-fi? Go in-depth about it if you want.

I'm into anything, to be honest. I like all of it. I'm most experienced in fantasy and post-apocalyptic/modern, but for some reason I've become really interested in superhero RP. I'm not too into IP roleplaying anymore, unless it's very loose.

6) What're your hobbies? Do you collect rocks or mount insects?

I'm a senior in English, getting ready to enter an MFA program. I like to write a lot, as well as read and all that stuff. I'm married, so doing anything with my wife - cooking, traveling, watching great TV shows and movies, are all fun. I also play guitar and bass, although they're both casual now (I used to play in a bunch of punk rock bands when I was in high school).

7) What's something you're good at besides writing? Maybe you're on the volleyball team or you're a quick learner? Maybe you play the flute or can fold up chairs amazingly fast? xD

I'm a pretty good driver, which I guess is something. I live in Minnesota, where the roads can be absolute crap for half of the year, so I've learned how to adapt to that. Being a delivery driver for a few years also helped. As for the 'besides writing' bit, writing really is one of my passions - it's what I study and love. I've recorded a CD and EP in the past, written a bunch of songs, played a bunch of shows, so I guess you could say I'm an okay musican (I'm no Minaj, though).

8) Do you have any friends here at RPG that invited you here? Would you want to make more friends while you're here?

None, yet. I'd love to meet new people.

And lastly...

9) Do we get cookies for looking through your thread and saying hello?

As long as you have them enabled. ;)

Looking forward to having fun here, and hope to meet some awesome people and get my RP on! Thanks for reading.

Pat Shurmur preparing for what's expected to be his final game as Browns head coach - news-herald.com

Cleveland Browns head coach Pat Shurmur yells from the sidelines in the third quarter of an NFL football game against the Kansas City Chiefs, Sunday, Dec. 9, 2012, in Cleveland. (AP Photo/Tony Dejak)

PITTSBURGH ? All Pat Shurmur wanted to focus on in the final week of the regular season was the Browns' preparation for their game today against the Steelers.

He did not want to talk about what he knows is coming soon after the clock in Heinz Field reads 0:00 ? the decision on his job status.

CEO Joe Banner, speaking for owner Jimmy Haslam, promises to announce the fate of Shurmur and General Manager Tom Heckert "quickly." Both are expected to be fired on Monday.

Through all the distractions, Shurmur and his assistants stayed focused on the Steelers.

"Listen, I get this," Shurmur said. "My concerns are for my team and making sure that we do all the right things during the game to give our guys the best chance to win. That's where I'm at.

"At some point after that, I'll begin to think about what goes on from there. No, I'm not worried about it."

The Browns were 10-22 in two seasons under Eric Mangini and he was fired by former Browns president Mike Holmgren. The Browns are 9-22 under Shurmur. He has to win with a quarterback, Thad Lewis, playing in his first NFL game, in a place where the Browns haven't won since 2003, just to match Mangini.

Shurmur did answer when asked what he is most proud of during the last two years, but even then he began by saying his focus is on the Steelers.

"I think we've made improvements ? some may say not fast enough ? but I think we've made improvements," Shurmur said. "I think we came into a less than ideal situation when we got here.

"Every situation is different, and I'm proud of that. I'm proud of the work the guys I hired did in terms of inspiring the players to improve. It's a little different thought process when you're working with so many young ones. There are certain things you've got to keep hammering home that when you've got a veteran crew, you know you talk about other things. So these guys, I think, did an outstanding job of that. Continued...

"We haven't won enough football games, and I know that's the way this things works. But in our situation, I see improvement and I'll leave it at that. The rest of it, going in depth to all that, I think that's a discussion for after we play Pittsburgh."

The Browns are playing the Steelers without starting quarterback Brandon Weeden, backup Colt McCoy, starting running back Trent Richardson, starting right cornerback Sheldon Brown, starting safeties T.J. Ward and Usama Young and backup tight end Jordan Cameron. All are on the shelf with various injuries.

Last month, the Steelers did not have starting quarterback Ben Roethlisberger for the game in Cleveland. The Browns' defense forced eight turnovers. Steelers quarterback Charlie Batch threw three interceptions when the Browns squeaked out a 20-14 victory.

Most of the Browns' injuries are to the offense. Middle linebacker D'Qwell Jackson says it is up to the defense to carry the mail today.

"The way I look at it, Cleveland Browns defense has to outplay the Pittsburgh Steelers defense," Jackson said. "As long as we're on the field, we have to outplay them. Because right now they're first in total defense. They're always up there. That's a personal challenge for myself, we talked about it from within our room. It's a personal challenge regardless of what's happening throughout the game.

"We plan on it being a low (scoring) ballgame. To sweep them is something that hasn't been done since 1988. We can walk away from this season with something to brag about and to build off of going into next season."

The question to be answered is who the builder will be.

Teen songwriter with cancer is YouTube sensation

LAKELAND, Minn. - Aspiring musicians are always on a mission to get their music heard. Zach Sobiech now has that covered.

Zach's song "Clouds" -- posted on YouTube in November -- has already been viewed nearly 1.5 million times.

For any other artist that might portend a bright future, but Zach wrote the song as a message to those he loves about his terminal cancer.

"That was kind of just like a cry for help honestly," said Zach from the bedroom of his home in Lakeland. "I needed someone to drop a rope down to me."

Zach was starting his senior year at Stillwater High School this past fall -- out of treatment options for his Osteosarcoma -- and listening to his classmates talk about college plans, while Zach was unsure if he'd live long enough to even go.

When she first heard "Clouds," Zach's childhood friend Sammy Brown was struck by the song's cheery melody, married to lyrics that pulled no punches.

"The song was kind of a way to communicate to me and to everybody in his life. What he was going through," Sammy said.

Radio station KS95 arranged for a studio and musicians to record the song, with Zach doing vocals.

No one expected what followed.

Spread by both old and new media, "Clouds" has not only piled up YouTube views, but has inspired several tributes on the video sharing site, including one from an entire elementary school class.

Supportive notes have arrived at the Sobiech home from all over the world, among them, autographed photos from Dolly Parton and John Elway.

The Green Bay Packers sent a box filled with Packers' memorabilia and a signed photo of Aaron Rodgers. While Zach appreciated the gesture, he left the Rodgers photo in the box for now. He is, after all, a die-hard Vikings fan.

Money has also poured in to the cancer fund Zach's set up through the Children's Cancer Research Fund. Already, $50,000 dollars has been raised through donations and downloads of Zach's song.

Zach's parents, Laura and Rob Sobiech, never imagined the song would find an audience beyond Zach's circle of family and friends.

They have, however, come to understand its appeal.

"He didn't really hide anything with this song and I think that's what people connect to. This kid isn't hiding where he's at," said Zach's dad.

Zach's prognosis is not good -- a few months perhaps, doctors have told him. Still, he applied for, and was granted admission into, the University of Minnesota in the fall of 2013.

And until then, Zach is enjoying his time with his high school classmates and his new-found success as a songwriter.

"My situation might not get better, but the fact that I can affect other people's lives while I'm here in a good way, by writing, that just means the world to me," he said.

These are the lyrics to "Clouds" - written by Zack Sobiech:

Well I fell down, down, down
Into this dark and lonely hole
There was no one there to care about me anymore
And I needed a way to climb and grab a hold of the edge
You were sitting there holding a rope.
And we'll go up, up, up
But I'll fly a little higher
We'll go up in the clouds because the view is a little nicer
Up here my dear
It won't be long now, it won't be long now.
When I get back on land
Well I'll never get my chance
Be ready to live and it'll be ripped right out of my hands
Maybe someday we'll take a little ride
We'll go up, up, up and everything will be just fine.
And we'll go up, up, up
But I'll fly a little higher
We'll go up in the clouds because the view is a little nicer
Up here my dear.
It won't be long now, it won't be long now
If only I had a little bit more time
If only I had a little bit more time with you.
We could go up, up, up
And take that little ride
And sit there holding hands
And everything would be just right
And maybe someday I'll see you again
We'll float up in the clouds and we'll never see the end.
And we'll go up, up, up
But I'll fly a little higher
We'll go up in the clouds because the view is a little nicer
Up here my dear
It won't be long now, it won't be long now.

Internet Marketing Search Engine Optimization SEM SEO service ...

SEO will let you increase your rankings on search engines. It depends on the keywords you are using. If you want to attract more visitors to your site, you should create a website with keywords that are popular. The post below can help you come to grips with some of the complexities of SEO through some very useful tips.

Make sure to configure your server to be sensitive to capitalized letters on URLs. If not, your site could be respidered with upper and lower case letters decreasing your link ranking.

Incorporate keywords and phrases into HTML tags to improve your sites SEO. Search engines place more weight on keywords in titles than on words in the main body. Focus on the most relevant keywords.

Any articles that you contribute should always contain backlinks that are associated to your website. This is particularly prudent if your website is targeted at ezines audiences. Many time, these e-zines are archived, meaning that the articles and links are kept active almost indefinitely.

Membership in the Chamber of Commerce and Better Business Bureau will enhance your search engine optimization and increase your credibility. These organizations link to their member businesses, so you can get more local visitors. Also, if you are a part of this Better Business Bureau and have good ratings on their site, your customers will trust you even more.

You have to give keyword density some attention when optimizing pages for the search engines. No more than twenty percent of your content should consist in keywords.

Before selecting a SEO company to support your website, be certain to investigate them thoroughly. Ask solid and direct questions about their results, their success in SEO promotion, their best practices and most importantly, ask how long before you start seeing results. Also ask to see some of their previous work, and see if you can speak with some of their former clients. An upstanding, high quality company will have no problem with this.

If you include a blog on your website, you will show up more often on search engines. The amount of visitors finding you site will be on the rise.

Take advantage of the companies that provide SEO services. These companies will help you get your site a much higher search engine ranking. You can often find great deals on these services.

While pictues make a website look attractive, sites that are looking to improve their search rankings don?t concentrate on images. Only the URL is offered for the search engine index when there is an image link.

An important component of your website is an RSS feed, also known as a Really Simple Syndication feed, that can provide potential buyers with relevant updates. If RSS feeds are updated regularly, they count as fresh content. If you can?t find a suitable feed, create your own. Make sure it has relevant information for your target market. It is also wise to encourage others in subscribing to your RSS feed.

SEO takes time, so be patient. Of course you would love to realize immediate results after doing all that hard work. With millions of websites already online, it will take time for yours to fight its way to the front. You need to stay with it, even if you are not seeing any changes yet. You will reap the reward and climb the ranks in the search engine results over time with hard work and dedication.

Consider advertising products through podcasting. You can include both audio and video content in a podcast, just be sure it is content your users care about. They are growing more and more popular among consumers, and the good news is all they require is a video camera or tape recorder. Doing this will allow the description of your podcast to appear.

All of your links, incoming and internal, should use keywords. ? as your main anchor text. This will help the search engines see your links and additional keywords as being relevant, which will get you higher search rankings. Double check that all of your past content has appropriate keywords in the anchor text also.

Every page in your website needs to be easy to read. If you design a website which is easy to navigate and read, including accessibility options like making the font size larger, you?ll find that your site ranks higher on search engines. This is excellent for both your readers with impairments and disabilities, and your search ranking, as well.

Search engine optimization works by seeking out popular keywords and then applying a mathematical formula to rank the page based on these words. The highest-ranking websites are those whose keyword content closely matches a search term; you can make your website one of them by employing keywords properly. The most effective ways to use keywords are covered in this article.

Brooke Burke Shows Off Thyroid Cancer Surgery Scar | Radar Online

National Photo Group

By Radar Staff

Brooke Burke didn't try to hide the news of her thyroid cancer surgery, and the brave Dancing with the Stars co-host now isn't trying to cover up the scar she earned from that surgery.

Burke was out with her children in Malibu Friday, and made no attempt to hide or cover up the very noticeable scar on her neck.

As RadarOnline.com has been reporting, Burke announced in November that she needed the surgery.

PHOTOS: Celebs Stand Up To Cancer

"I need to have a thyroidectomy," Brooke told her fans in a video blog. "I'm going to have a nice big scar across my neck."

Mrs. David Charvet knew what to expect from the procedure which took place early December, and didn't mind sharing it.

She should be in great shape by the time Dancing with the Stars Season 16 debuts in March, and will no doubt be asked about her recovery on the premiere episode.

Missing Ga. boys located in Texas, father held

(AP) ? Police said two young boys from Georgia who were reported missing this week were found safe in Texas on Saturday and their father is in custody and facing charges.

Brothers Ben and Henry Cleary ? ages 9 and 7 ? were visiting with their father, Daniel Cleary, of Roswell, and were supposed to return home Wednesday. An Amber Alert was issued Thursday.

Roswell Police Lt. James H. McGee said that the 46-year-old Daniel Cleary was taken into custody Saturday evening in Austin, Texas.

"We have recovered the kids," McGee told The Associated Press. "They were with him and they were OK."

Austin police said a citizen had recognized the boys from the alert and notified police at 5:11 p.m. CDT that they were at a hotel.

Officers "observed the suspect and the two boys, and recovered the two boys and took the suspect into custody," Austin police Lt. James Nisula.

The children's mother, Theresa Nash, spoke to the boys by phone and was on the way to get them.

She told FOX 5 Atlanta they were "battling each other on their IPads and planning Henry's birthday party."

Nash had told WGCL-TV in Atlanta she was concerned because Daniel Cleary had purchased a firearm about a month ago, was under stress and drinking.

Police said they did not know if Daniel Cleary was in possession of a firearm when he was taken into custody.

McGee said authorities will arrange for Daniel Cleary's extradition to Georgia. He faces a charge of interstate interference with custody, a felony. McGee said police will discuss with prosecutors whether other charges will be brought.

Police on Friday had released surveillance footage showing the two missing boys at a Walmart in Tennessee on Dec. 23 and 24 with their father. Though initial reports were that the Walmart was in Jackson, McGee said it was in fact in Chattanooga.

With GOP divided on tax vote, Boehner pulls ?Plan B? off House floor

House Speaker John Boehner?s carefully planned effort to paint Republicans as unified behind a tax and spending plan was in turmoil Thursday night, as he was unable to find enough votes from his own members to pass a tax increase on the wealthy.

Boehner?s sudden decision not to vote was a stunning setback for the speaker, who had hoped his ?Plan B? would give him fresh momentum heading into a crucial round of talks with President Barack Obama to avoid the fiscal cliff.

But the warning signs were too numerous to ignore. Conservatives balked at his plan to tax those earning more than $1 million. Even after Republican leaders agreed to allow a vote on a spending plan, that plan passed by only a 215-209 vote.

About an hour and a half later, after tense closed-door meetings with Republican leaders, Boehner issued a statement.

?The House did not take up the tax measure today because it did not have sufficient support from our members to pass,? he said.

?Now it is up to the president to work with Senator Reid on legislation to avert the fiscal cliff. The House has already passed legislation to stop all of the January 1 tax rate increases and replace the sequester with responsible spending cuts that will begin to address our nation's crippling debt. The Senate must now act."

The Senate does not plan to act.

Tax cuts are due to expire at the end of the year, and automatic spending cuts will kick in Jan. 2 unless alternatives are adopted.

No final action is expected anytime soon, as the Senate is scheduled to leave Friday until Dec. 27 and the House is at a partisan impasse.

The House votes were always a gamble. Democrats made it clear throughout the day that the Thursday tax and spending measures were dead in the Senate, ?bills to nowhere,? as House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., put it.

Republican leaders were hoping the votes would have value, showing they stood together in backing tough spending measures while accepting some tax increase for the wealthy. But Boehner had to struggle to win over wary conservatives opposed to any tax increase and seeking even more spending cuts.

The vote came during a day of familiar but intensifying partisan oratory, flavored with expressions of hope that a deal was in the works.

Democrats howled that the votes were little more than a sideshow that demonstrated how Republicans were delaying progress so they could score political points.

The House bill would have only millionaires pay the pre-Bush top rate of 39.6 percent, up from the current 35 percent. Everyone else would continue to pay at current rates. The spending bill replaces the automatic cuts with several different adjustments, including eliminating fraud, waste and abuse in federal programs. The bill also would cancel the automatic cuts in defense and some domestic programs, and replace those cuts with reductions in a series of other programs.

The Democratic-led Senate has no plan to consider the bills, said Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev.

?It is dead on arrival here in the Senate,? said Sen. Patty Murray, D-Wash. Virtually all the spending plan had passed the House months ago and went nowhere in the Senate.

Democrats were downright angry at all the maneuvering. Why, they asked, is Boehner wasting time cajoling members of his own party ? he worked hard to convince wavering anti-tax conservatives ? to back bills going nowhere?

?Republicans are wasting time on political stunts,? Reid said.

At the White House, Press Secretary Jay Carney said Boehner?s bill, called Plan B, was a "multi-day exercise in futility," but he insisted that there was "still an opportunity for compromise on a ?big deal.?"

Thursday?s Republican approach is a time-worn strategy, putting people on the record at a crucial point during negotiations, to show their rivals and the public that they?re willing to take a stand, no matter how hopeless. The debate allowed them to go before the House ? and the American public ? insisting that they have a position and the Democrats don?t.

?President Obama and Senate Democrats haven?t done much of anything. Their Plan B is to slow-walk us over the fiscal cliff,? Boehner told a news conference. Obama did offer a plan earlier this week that includes $1.2 trillion in new revenue and $1.22 trillion in spending cuts.

Lesley Clark of the Washington Bureau contributed.

BC's York breaks NCAA hockey win record

Boston College coach Jerry York became the NCAA hockey career victory leader Saturday, directing the top-ranked Eagles to a 5-2 win over Alabama-Huntsville on Saturday in the Mariucci Classic.

The 67-year-old York is 925-558-95 in 41 seasons to move past former Michigan State coach Ron Mason for the record. In 19 seasons at Boston College, York is 458-223-61.

York downplayed the accomplishment.

"I've always been about the team," York said. "When I was a player, I was like that. Since I've been a coach, I've been like that. I've never really sought individual goals."

York began his career as a 26-year-old head coach at Clarkson in 1972, then took over for Mason at Bowling Green before heading to Boston College. He has won four national titles with the Eagles to go with one at Bowling Green.

York's teams have a record 37 wins in the NCAA tournament. They have won the Hockey East tournament nine times and five Beanpot titles ? including the last three in a row.

York said his thoughts Saturday were on beating the Chargers.

"Our focus is on our team," he said. "We have a chance to win a trophy. We're focused squarely on our team."

York said he plans to keep coaching as long at Boston College will let him.

"I feel good. I feel healthy. I enjoy what I do," York said. "As long as BC feels as though I'm doing a good job, I'll keep on moving."

Western character actor Harry Carey Jr. dies at 91

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Harry Carey Jr., a character actor who starred in such Westerns as "3 Godfathers" and "Wagon Master," has died in California at the age of 91.

His daughter, Melinda Carey, says he died Thursday of natural causes at a hospice facility in Santa Barbara, Calif.

Carey's career spanned more than 50 years and included such John Ford films as "She Wore a Yellow Ribbon" and "The Searchers." He also appeared in the movies "Gremlins" and "Back to the Future Part III."

His memoir, "Company of Heroes: My Life as an Actor in the John Ford Stock Company," was published in 1994.

DirecTV Genie wholehome DVR review

We're very happy that 2012 ended up being the year of whole-home DVRs. We reviewed Dish Network's Hopper earlier this year and now we've spent some quality time with DirecTV's Genie -- can't say we expected the cute names. Capable of serving up to eight rooms in your house (but only four at once), the Genie system works with a variety of setups, including being built into some newer Samsung TVs. Only available as part of DirecTV service, the Genie can be had for free by some new DirecTV customers who are willing to sign a term agreement and select the right package, and available to existing customers as an upgrade for $300 depending on the circumstances. If DirecTV didn't already have you at five tuners, 1TB and up to eight rooms, then click through for a full rundown on the latest the original direct satellite broadcast TV provider has to offer.

Iraqi Sunnis demonstrate in Anbar, west of Baghdad

FALLUJAH, Iraq (AP) ? Witnesses say tens of thousands of Iraqi Sunni Muslims have massed along a major western highway in the latest of a week of large demonstrations against the Shiite-led government.

The protesters gathered Friday near the city of Fallujah, which is in the vast Sunni-dominated province of Anbar west of Baghdad.

Protesters held aloft placards declaring the day a "Friday of honor." Some carried old Iraqi flags used during the era of ousted dictator Saddam Hussein. Others raised current ones.

The demonstrations follow the arrest last week of 10 bodyguards assigned to Finance Minister Rafia al-Issawi, who comes from Anbar and is one of the central government's most senior Sunni officials.

The province has been the scene of several large demonstrations and road blockages since last Saturday.

REAL ESTATE: Equity home sales on the rise in November ... - blog

Posted on | December 28, 2012 | Comments

California?s pending home sales fell in November, as equity home sales across the state and the Inland region began to come out of the closet.

A report released Friday by the California Association of Realtors said pending home sales, forward-looking indicators of future home sales activity, fell nine-tenths of 1 percent from November 2011.

But the sputter the state?s largest real estate trade association blamed on seasonal factors was mixed with a more telling indicator of what?s to come in 2013: The share of equity sales is on the rise.

The pool of equity sales inched up to 64.9 percent from 63.4 percent in October, and represented a 14.7 percent gain from November 2011.

Equity home sales figures haven?t been this good since May 2008.

What?s more, the combined share of all distressed property sales fell to 35.1 percent in November, according to the C.A.R. report. The pool of distressed property sales stood at 49.8 percent in November 2011.

How did the hard-hit Inland region fare?

The percentage of single-family distressed home sales is still well above the state numbers, but the percentage of distressed home sales noted in November fell by the double-digits.

Realtors say they?re seeing more ?conventional? housing stock come into the marketplace, as homeowners with equity in their property see home prices began a slow recovery, rents began to rise and mortgage lending rates remain at near historic levels.

The pool of distressed homes in Riverside County fell 10 percent from November 2011 to 51 percent, down from 61 percent. In San Bernardino County, distressed property sales plunged 20 percentage points to 44 percent. In November 2011, some 64 percent of all single-family homes sold in San Bernardino County were in distress.

Mississippi River drops, threatening barge traffic

(AP) ? The Mississippi River level is dropping again and barge industry trade groups warned Thursday that river commerce could essentially come to a halt as early as next week in an area south of St. Louis.

Mike Petersen of the Army Corps of Engineers said ice on the northern Mississippi River is reducing the flow more than expected at the middle part of the river that is already at a low-water point unseen in decades, the result of months of drought.

The river level is now expected to get to 3 feet at the Thebes, Ill., gauge on Jan. 6, a juncture that could force new limitations. Worse still, the long-range forecast from the National Weather Service calls for the river to keep falling, reaching 2 feet on Jan. 23.

The Coast Guard remains confident that the nation's largest waterway will remain open. But officials with two trade groups ? the American Waterways Operators and Waterways Council Inc. ? said in a joint news release that even if the river is open, further limits on barges will bring commercial traffic to a halt.

Thebes, about 150 miles south of St. Louis, is a treacherous spot for barge operators because of hazardous rock formations and a big bend in the river. The corps is in the process of removing the rocks but work isn't expected to be finished until mid- to late-January at the earliest.

The trade groups renewed their call for presidential action requiring the Corps of Engineers to increase the flow of water from an upper Missouri River dam in South Dakota. The corps cut the flow by two-thirds in November because of drought conditions in that region, reducing the amount of Missouri River water flowing into the Mississippi.

Michael Toohey, president and CEO of Waterways Council Inc., said that without the additional flow "we will have run out of time on this national crisis."

The depth of the Mississippi is regulated by dams north of St. Louis, and the depth increases south of Cairo, Ill., where the Ohio River converges. But the roughly 180-mile stretch from St. Louis to Cairo is approaching record lows. Experts say that if barges stop moving, the potential impact on shipments of essentials such as corn, grain, coal and petroleum could reach into the billions of dollars.

Drafts, or the portion of each barge that is submerged, are already limited to 9 feet in the middle Mississippi. If the river gauge gets to 3 feet at Thebes, the Coast Guard may be forced to limit drafts even further. Restricted drafts mean less cargo per barge. Officials with the trade group say that if drafts are restricted to 8 feet or lower, many operators will halt shipping.

Lt. Colin Fogarty of the Coast Guard said the agency remains confident "we can still maintain a safe, navigable waterway despite the low-water conditions."

But he acknowledged, "I'm not trying to paint a pretty picture here. We face very real, physical limitations at certain parts of the river that may inhibit barge operators because their vessels draft too much or push too much water."

Contractors hired by the corps have been using excavators on barges to remove the rock pinnacles near Thebes, and performed the first series of explosions on the pinnacles Friday. Further decisions on when to blast will be made on a day-to-day basis, Petersen said.

The corps released water from Carlyle Lake in southern Illinois earlier this month, a move that helped the river rise about 6 inches. Petersen says another release began Thursday, which will add another 6 inches of depth by around Jan. 6, a move aimed at trying to stave off barge restrictions.

Fogarty said every effort is being made to help barges keep moving, but don't expect any magic turning point.

"There is no silver bullet," Fogarty said. "This isn't a battle against the water. This is a campaign."

Monkey see, monkey do: Visual feedback is necessary for imitating facial expressions

Dec. 27, 2012 ? Research using new technology shows that our ability to imitate facial expressions depends on learning that occurs through visual feedback.

Studies of the chameleon effect confirm what salespeople, tricksters, and Lotharios have long known: Imitating another person's postures and expressions is an important social lubricant.

But how do we learn to imitate with any accuracy when we can't see our own facial expressions and we can't feel the facial expressions of others?

Richard Cook of City University London, Alan Johnston of University College London, and Cecilia Heyes of the University of Oxford investigate possible mechanisms underlying our ability to imitate in two studies published in Psychological Science, a journal of the Association for Psychological Science.

In the first experiment, the researchers videotaped participants as they recited jokes and then asked them to imitate four randomly selected facial expressions from their videos. When they achieved what they perceived to be the target expression, the participants recorded the attempt with the click of a computer mouse.

A computer program evaluated the accuracy of participants' imitation attempts against a map of the target expression. In contrast to previous studies that relied on subjective assessments, this new technology allowed for automated and objective measurement of imitative accuracy.

In one experiment, the researchers found that participants who were able to see their imitation attempts through visual feedback improved over successive attempts. But participants who had to rely solely on proprioception -- sensing the relative position of their facial features -- got progressively worse.

These results are consistent with the associative sequence-learning model, which holds that our ability to imitate accurately depends on learned associations between what we see (in the mirror or through feedback from others) and what we feel.

Cook and colleagues conclude that contingent visual feedback may be a useful component of rehabilitation and skill-training programs that are designed to improve individuals' ability to imitate facial gestures.

Could going over the fiscal cliff be a good thing?

It is long overdue for Americans to decide whether they want big government or not, Karlsson writes, instead of continuing the current policy of small government when it comes to taxation and big government when it comes to spending.

By Stefan Karlsson,?Guest blogger / December 28, 2012

The U.S. Capitol building is pictured as lawmakers returned from the Christmas recess in Washington Thursday. Not stopping the fiscal cliff would represent a great leap toward ending the current unsustainable and unsound build up of debt, Karlsson writes.

Mary F. Calvert/Reuters/File

Veronique de Rugy?makes the case for "going over the cliff". As she correctly points, that has its negative side in the form of higher marginal tax rates, something that is bad for growth, but nevertheless, it is long overdue for Americans to decide whether they want big government or not, instead of continuing the current policy of small government when it comes to taxation and big government when it comes to spending. In the long run, the current deficits that the combination of low taxes and high spending means is both unsound, harmful and unsustainable.

So ultimately, they 'll have to choose between either raising taxes (and that means higher taxes not just for the rich, but for the middle class as well) or cutting popular spending programmes or do a combination of these two. What the so-called "fiscal cliff" means is in fact doing that third option of both raising taxes and cutting spending to cut the current deficit of more than $1 trillion a year by half.?

Not stopping it would therefore represent a great leap toward ending the current unsustainable and unsound build up of debt. The fact that the so-called debt ceiling (currently at $16.4 trillion, more than $2 trillion higher than 16 months ago)?will be reached on the last day before "the cliff"?could be viewed as a sign that the massive deficit reduction it means should be implemented, even though parts of it (the marginal tax rate increases) are bad for growth.

Hillary Clinton to return to work following illness

Clinton (Gary Cameron/Reuters)

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton will return to work next week, her spokesman said, following a stomach virus that caused her to faint and suffer a concussion, which kept her from her official duties for three weeks.

"The Secretary continues to recuperate at home," spokesman Philippe Reines emailed reporters. "She had long planned to?take this holiday week off, so she had no work schedule. She looks?forward to getting back to the office next week and resuming her?schedule."

The virus and subsequent concussion led Clinton to cancel her highly anticipated congressional testimony Dec. 20 on the Sept. 11, 2012, attack on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi, Libya, that killed Ambassador Chris Stevens and 3 other diplomats. The administration has been roundly criticized by Republicans and others for how the attack was reported to the public and whether consulate security prior to the attack was adequate.

The politically charged subject matter of Clinton's testimony led some critics to accuse her of faking her illness.

"I?m not a doctor, but it seems as though that the secretary of state has come down with a case of Benghazi flu,? blunt-talking outgoing Rep. Allen West (R-Fla.) said on Fox News last week. Other conservative media outlets and figures issued similar criticisms.

Former U.S. ambassador to the U.N. John Bolton referred to her illness as a "diplomatic illness" during a television interview, and the New York Post blasted her decision in an editorial.

Clinton is expected to testify in January. No details have been publicly released regarding scheduling.

Pakistan Taliban spokesman outlines conditions for ceasefire

ISLAMABAD (Reuters) - The Pakistani Taliban have outlined conditions for a ceasefire, including the adoption of Islamic law and a break with the United States, a spokesman said Thursday, an offer a senior government official described as "preposterous".

The Taliban, in a letter sent to the Pakistan daily The News, also demanded that Pakistan stop its involvement in the war pitting Afghan insurgents against the Kabul government and refocus on a war of "revenge" against India.

The letter from Taliban spokesman Amir Muawiya comes as the focus in Afghanistan shifts from a military push by NATO troops to potential peace talks, and amid speculation of a rift between top Pakistan Taliban leaders.

Military officials told Reuters last month that Pakistan Taliban leader Hakimullah Mehsud had lost operational command to his deputy, Wali ur-Rehman, who is considered to be more open to reconciliation with the Pakistani government. The Taliban deny Mehsud has lost command.

The Pakistani Taliban are a separate entity allied to the Afghan Taliban. Known as the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), they have launched devastating attacks against the Pakistani military and civilians.

"They are a bunch of criminals. This is not the Afghan Taliban. They are not open to talks," said one senior government official who called the Pakistan Taliban offer "preposterous".

"No one can take such an offer or terms seriously. The TTP is not a proper entity, certainly not one any government can negotiate with."

The ceasefire conditions, confirmed by spokesman Ihsanullah Ihsan in a phone call to Reuters, said Pakistan should rewrite its laws and constitution according to Islamic law.

"We are ready to cease fire with Pakistan as long as they meet our demands, that an Islamic system should be put into place, they should fix their foreign policy and stop agreeing to American's demands," Ihsan said.

The militants accused Pakistan's army of acting as "mercenaries" for America and pledged to continue attacks on two major political parties they say serve U.S. interests.

"The big mistake (the government) made is that they fought America's war in Afghanistan and brought it into Pakistan," Ihsan said.

NATO troops are due to hand over control of most operations in Afghanistan to Afghan forces next year and officials have been eager to start peace talks with the Taliban there.

But the Taliban insurgency in both Pakistan and Afghanistan is fragmented and senior commanders often disagree with each other over strategy.

An Archipelago of Health Information Islands | HealthWorks Collective

Posted 12/27/12 on Medscape Connect?s Care and Cost Blog

My wife Elaine was hospitalized for 6 days recently with an array of ailments related to her advancing cancer, so diagnosing and addressing her problems required a multidisciplinary approach. In addition to the nursing and support staffs, she was tended by an emergency physician, two hospitalists, three gastroenterologists, a pulmonologist, an infectious disease physician and an interventional radiologist. With the exception of one specialist who had performed a procedure on her two weeks earlier, this episode was the first time any had met Elaine.

Each clinician was familiar with her status before visiting her, because the health system has an enterprise-wide electronic health record (EHR) that aggregates information into each patient?s chart. The hospitalists coordinated the care process and also touched base with Elaine?s primary care physician and her oncologist.

In other words, the system worked exactly like we hoped it would but often doesn?t. Especially in complex cases like this, the likelihood of a positive result is enhanced if the team members have access to the same complete information, and if someone ? in this case the hospitalists ? quarterbacks the activity.

Of course, this was possible because all the care occurred within a single health system that has a unified EHR. Information from EHRs in independent physician practices or ambulatory care sites ? lab results, images, previous complaints, drugs and dosages ? is unlikely to be merged, because the systems can?t talk. The same thing holds between health systems. Health care is currently an archipelago of information islands.

Information isn?t shared, not because it isn?t important, but because the nation?s EHR vendors have not committed to implement standardized protocols that can allow all health care information to ?interoperate,? or flow seamlessly from one system to another.

There has been lots of policy discussion about interoperability, but EHR vendors have dragged their feet, and for good reason. A significant part of this is about protecting market share. If EHR customers can easily move their data to another platform, it also becomes easier to switch to a different platform.

But the care and cost consequences of this industry-wide strategy have been catastrophic. The barriers to merging pockets of data mean that physicians working with the same patient make decisions based on different incomplete data sets. This degrades attempts at objective evaluation, produces conflicting conclusions, impedes care collaboration and coordination, results in poorer outcomes and generates higher cost. It is not unreasonable to believe that this single issue unnecessarily costs the American people thousands of lives and hundreds of billions of dollars each year.

Some have?argued?that by 2014, the elements will be in place for safe, seamless health information exchange. But the incentives must be powerful, firmly in place and non-negotiable. Any industry that has shown a willingness to harm its customers for its own benefit over a period of years is not likely to simply cave without a fight.

The technologies required to?exchange patient information are available and well understood. (Check out the?Direct Trust?protocol for secure ?push? of messages and attachments, which is among the federal standards in the Meaningful Use EHR incentive program.) Our permissiveness in allowing systems to remain isolated has tied medical professionals? hands, caused patients to suffer unnecessarily, and exacerbated the already out-of-control health costs that threaten our larger economy.

American health care is too important to be left purely to market forces in some areas. Health information exchange is the foundation of care coordination, and so certainly fits that criterion. We need a zero-tolerance policy that mandates safe, secure health information interoperability, and severe penalties, like a market ban on products that do not align with exchange requirements, when products do not comply with standard protocols.

As in so many other areas of health care, employers and other powerful groups could leverage their own strength to redefine health care practice in ways that serves patients? and purchasers? interests first, rather than the other way around.

Spokesman: George H.W. Bush in 'guarded condition'

Former President George H.W. Bush is currently in the intensive care unit where his doctors have prescribed him a liquid-only diet. NBC's Natalie Morales reports.

By Charles Hadlock and Elizabeth Chuck, NBC News

Updated at 7:08 p.m. ET: Former President George H.W. Bush was battling an elevated fever Wednesday and was in "guarded condition" in a hospital intensive care unit, a family spokesman said.

?"The President is alert and conversing with medical staff, and is surrounded by family," said a statement from family spokesman Jim McGrath.?Bush, 88, was moved to the intensive care unit at The Methodist Hospital at the Texas Medical Center in Houston on Sunday, McGrath said.?

Bush has been in the hospital since?Nov. 29?for treatment of complications related to bronchitis. After initial expectations that he would be hospitalized for only a few days proved to be wrong, doctors said through a hospital statement on Dec. 13 that they expected Bush would "be able to?celebrate Christmas at home."

But the 41st president remained at The Methodist Hospital -- where he was visited on Christmas by his wife, Barbara, his son, Neil, Neil's wife, and his grandson, Pierce -- all of whom brought him a meal of Chinese food for Christmas dinner, The Houston Chronicle reported.

He also received gifts, emails, and telephone calls from family members and close friends, NBC's Janet Shamlian reported.

On Wednesday, McGrath told NBC News that the former president's fever was elevated from the previous day, although he said that he did not know by how much.?Earlier, McCrath had said that doctors saw a "slight improvement" in Bush's condition that morning.

McGrath said that Dorothy Bush, his daughter, visited Wednesday, and George W. Bush, the 43rd president, would be visiting soon.

Bronchitis is a common condition in which the bronchial tubes in the lungs become inflamed and produce mucus, which creates the need to cough, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. It can turn serious in people with weak immune systems, including children and the elderly. Symptoms such as chest pain, weakness and coughing typically last two weeks, but can linger for as long as two months.?

In the weeks since he was admitted, Bush has had a low-grade fever, but doctors have said they are "cautiously optimistic" he will recover, Shamlian reported.

George Kovacik, a hospital spokesman, said in a statement earlier this week that Bush was in stable condition.?

?His doctors feel he should build up his energy before going home. They remain optimistic about his full recovery and are being extra cautious with his care,? the statement said.

Leader of an American political dynasty, George Bush's influence was felt beyond his terms as president and vice president. Take a look back at his life and career.

Bush was elected president of the United States in 1988, the capstone of a long career of public service.

He was a Texas Republican member of the House of Representatives in the 1960s and 1970s and head of the CIA in 1976-1977.?The organization?s headquarters in Langley, Va., was later?renamed the ?George Bush Center for Intelligence.?

Bush lost his first bid for the Republican nomination for the U.S. presidency in 1980, at which time Ronald Reagan chose him to be his running mate. He went on to serve two terms as Reagan?s vice president before winning the presidency. He was defeated for re-election in 1992 by Bill Clinton.

In late 2004, Bush teamed up with Clinton to raise money for the victims of the Asian tsunami. That effort was so successful, the two former presidents did the same for Katrina victims in 2005.?

President George H.W. Bush remains in the hospital. NBC News' Janet Shamlian reports.
