Penn. state university faculty union will vote on strike

Nov. 14, 2012

Dive Summary:

  • After two years of failed negotiations on a new contract, the Association of Pennsylvania State College and University Faculties (ASPCUF) will vote on whether to strike.
  • Steve Hicks, president of the ASPCUF, claims that while the union does not have "a burning desire" to do so, a lack of progress in negotiations may lead to a faculty strike at the beginning of the school year's second semester in January.?
  • Negotiations between the state university system and the ASPCUF?are at a standstill; the state system wants to reduce costs due to declining enrollment and state funding while the union wants less expensive health care, better compensation for distance learning courses and part-time temporary faculty.

From the article:

"... If faculty vote yes and the union decides a strike is needed, it probably would not occur until the second semester, which begins Jan. 28, Hicks said. Finals for the current semester conclude Dec. 14.

Unlike public school district unions, APSCUF is not required to give the system notice of a strike. ..."
